Two space heater recalls, totaling 110,500 units, were announced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission today because the heaters pose a fire hazard. The larger recall includes 107,500 space heaters sold under the Lasko and Air King brand names (far right) which are responsible for at least 36 incidents of overheating, half of which resulted in burn damage to floors or carpets. Creative Heating Solutions recalled 3,000 space heaters after a report of a unit catching fire.

Last week we wrote about an EdenPure space heater recall undertaken by Costco "due to the potential to overheat and cause the plastic front casing to melt." Space heaters cause an estimated 21,650 home fires and 1,512 fire-related injuries and deaths each year, according the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

The Lasko recall includes space heaters that were sold between 2002 and 2004. The Lasko model #5540 was sold at Sam's Club and other retailers for up to $49 and the Air King model #8540 was sold by W.W. Grainger for $80. Lasko is offering free replacement heaters. The Creative Heating Solutions recall includes heaters with several model numbers (check recall notice) that were sold at Hancock Fabrics and by America's Sewing Machine Company. from October 2008 to March 2009 for between $380 and $480.
