One key position analysts had expected to be named in President Obama’s Cabinet—a car czar to oversee the restructuring of GM, Ford, and Chrysler—now will not be filled, according the Detroit News report.
The White House announced this morning that a board of advisers will fill the role of the car czar. The advisers will be led by Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner. The two other advisers will be:
Ron Bloom, special assistant to the president of the United Steelworkers. Bloom is credited with creative ideas in downsizing the steel industry and is an expert on restructuring.
And Lawrence Summers, director of the National Economic Council, and former Treasury secretary in Bill Clinton’s second term.
The council is expected to advise President Obama, who will then make final decisions himself. It is worth noting that these men are finance experts, and none has any direct experience working in the auto industry.
