Life without fossil fuels--Saudi oil minister warns of withdrawal symptoms
Apr 2, 2009 9:38 AM

Oil-refinery If America is addicted to oil, then Saudi Arabia is our pusher. And the fact that we are trying to wean ourselves from fossil fuel and climb on the wagon has not escaped their notice.

At an OPEC meeting in Vienna this week, Saudi oil minister Ali Al-Naimi, called America’s drive toward alternative fuels “dangerous” and “catastrophic,” adding that alternative fuels would never be more than “supplemental” sources of energy. Clearly, the Obama Administration sees things differently. (Read: “Obama pledges $2.4 billion for electric vehicles & technology.”)

While Al-Naimi did raise some important economic issues regarding oil industry investments and the potential for a similar price spike like we saw last summer, the warnings sounded sour coming from a man in his position. (Thanks to autobloggreen.com and Green Inc. for the heads up.)

Let us know what you think: Will withdrawal symptoms from oil be too severe? Or can increased use of alternative fuels eventually satiate America’s energy needs and wean us off our addiction?
