Supersized TomTom XXL navigators with 5-inch screens
Sep 18, 2009 2:00 PM
TomTom-XXL-540-GPSThe TomTom XXL line lives up to its name with a massive five-inch widescreen display, providing an oversized alternative to the popular GPS-maker’s 3.5-inch and 4.3-inch devices. The TomTom XXL 530S and XXL 540S are well-suited for use in larger vehicles where the windshield may be further from the driver, such as full-sized pickup trucks or RVs. They may also appeal to far-sighted drivers that would benefit from a larger display, or those with large fingers that find traditional-sized devices difficult to program.

The TomTom XXL 530S and XXL 540S feature full maps of the United States and Canada. The “S” in TomTom parlance denotes text-to-speech for spoken street names, rather than simple “turn left” or “turn right” verbal instructions. They are both equipped with IQ Routes, which uses historical traffic data to calculate routes appropriate to the time and day of the week. In addition, they provide the useful “Help Me” function that allows quick access to emergency service contact information and routing.

The XXL 540S adds reality view, for simulated depictions of major highway intersections with lane-specific guidance, as well as preloaded maps for Mexico and a total of 7 million points of interest.

Both devices go on sale in October, with the XXL 530S starting at $280 and the XXL 540S at $300.
