iPhone GPS navigation buying advice
Dec 14, 2009 10:19 AM

TomTom-map-iphone-promoThe Consumer Reports GPS team has become quite accustomed to the rapid pace at which the portable navigation device market moves, with new hardware and features emerging every few months. But the industry took a turn this past summer when the Apple iPhone OS 3.0 was introduced, enabling turn-by-turn applications on this immensely popular device.

Since then, the team has tested several navigation applications, in addition to assessing other automotive iPhone apps and those for Android and Blackberry. There are many compelling choices in the Apple iTunes store for iPhone users, with some from established name-brand navigation companies and others from innovative, smaller firms. The prices run a wide gamut, spanning from free to $100. It can be hard to know which to choose.

Unlike most novelty apps, these carry significant cost in most cases. Further, you may depend on them to arrive safely and efficiently to an important destination.

Having tested AT&T Navigator, iGo My Way, Navigon Mobile Navigator, Sygic Mobile Maps, TomTom iPhone application, Waze, and X Road G-Map for iPhone, we have put together an overall buying advice story that highlights the considerations and links to the reviews.
