While not the most inspiring cars out there, the Toyota Avalon is a model of tranquil motoring. It continues to be one of our top-rated sedans thanks to its quiet, spacious cabin; comfortable ride; and good fuel economy. In fact, it is as roomy, quiet and comfortable as some luxury cars costing twice as much money.
The Avalon’s 268-hp, 3.5-liter V6 provides smooth and strong acceleration. Fuel economy is impressive for a car this size and performance level. Expect 24 mpg overall in mixed driving on regular fuel. The civilized engine is complimented by a six-speed automatic transmission that shifts quickly and very smoothly.
Another Avalon strength is its quiet interior. The cabin calmness is the envy of many high-end luxury sedans. So much so that the cabin remains serene with a ride that comes without much road or wind disturbances.
While the ride is comfortable, the car’s handling includes a fair amount of body lean and not much agility. The steering isn’t particularly quick or communicative but at least it’s linear and has some weighting. But its handling highlights the car’s size and is not all that responsive.
The interior in our $34,974 XLS version is nicely finished and has large front seats that are roomy and mostly supportive, with moderately firm padding. The back seat is one of the best available, with lots of space and comfortable, supportive perches.
