The latest iPhone navigation app to be run through our testing gauntlet is the MotionX GPS Drive app from FullPower. A server-based application, MotionX GPS Drive has a low initial cost ($2.99 a month). An annual subscription costs just $25. MotionX GPS Drive automatically stores the latest map data that was downloaded to the phone. Further, the user can choose how much map area to download based on selected storage space, and a full route can be downloaded. This creative approach means MotionX is not dependent on continuous cellular signal to provide uninterrupted service.
Coming from outside the GPS industry, FullPower brings other fresh elements to the navigation market. The most noticeable is the appealing, adventure-inspiring graphics that give the program a look more befitting Indiana Jones than a pizza delivery driver.
Being a connected app, MotionX reaches out to the Internet for map and points of interest data. Rather than use Google, as do other apps and PNDs, MotionX uses the Microsoft Bing service.
Its novelties do not overcome the lack of several features that distinguish better navigators. Despite its strengths, the tested version of MotionX GPS Drive is best described as a basic navigator, though one with much potential.
