2010 CES: Garmin Approach G3 golf GPS - Smaller, lighter, cheaper
Jan 7, 2010 5:40 PM
The G3 tracks your current location, and it can show the distance to hazards, greens, and holes helping with club selection and strategy. The device can also be used as an electronic scorecard. Key data can be synched later to your computer via a USB connection.
The Approach G3 measures 2.2x3.9x1.3 inches, with a 2.6-inch screen. The Approach G5 measures 2.3x4.5x1.4 inches, with a three-inch screen. As we found with the hiking devices, the smaller size is lighter and more pocket friendly, though less viewing area can make it slightly harder to read and see details at a glance.
The Approach G3 is preloaded with 12,000 course maps - no subscription is necessary. Garmin continues to add American and Canadian courses, and it plans to expand to European courses in early 2010. (To verify that your favorite green is included, check garmin.com/golfcourses.)
The Garmin Approach G3 retails at $350, with the G5 at $450. A quick check at Amazon.com shows the devices priced much closer, with the compact G3 available for pre-order at $350 and the Approach G5 offered for $371.
