Jan 22, 2010 3:14 PM

Priced below a comparably equipped Buick LaCrosse, the new Opel-based Regal is set to start at $26,995 for the CXL trim and $29,495 for the CXL turbo model, including a $750 destination charge. The base CX trim will not be available until the 2012 model year.

The Regal GS show car concept with an estimated 255 hp and six-speed manual transmission was shown at the Detroit auto show.

The CXL line will come with a standard 2.4-liter, direct-injection four-cylinder engine with an estimated output of 182 horsepower. A 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, with 220 horsepower, will also be offered. Both engines will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel estimates are 30 mpg highway for the 2.4-liter engine and 29 mpg for the 2.0-liter turbo.

Turbo models will be available with a control system that allows drivers to choose from three operating modes that adjust the suspension, throttle and transmission response, and steering allowing for a more personalized driving experience.

Standard safety features include stability control, traction control, curtain air bags, and electronic parking brake. Also standard is 12-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, leather upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, iPod jack, OnStar, and traditional power amenities.

The premium CXL model will hit dealerships in the spring, with the turbo version to follow in late summer.
