Not only has it become temporarily impossible to purchase some of Toyota’s most popular models, it’s becoming harder to rent one, too.
In the wake of the unintended acceleration recall of several Toyota models, rental car companies Hertz, Avis, Budget, National, Enterprise, and Alamo have all suspended rentals of affected models along with the Pontiac Vibe, which is made by Toyota.
Hertz Chief Executive Officer Mark P. Frissora said, "We are taking action so there can be no question about the safety of our customers and the cars we rent.” The Company said it is working with Toyota to make repairs as quickly as possible, and that several Toyota models in its rental fleet are not included in the recall.
Other major car rental companies issued similar statements, saying that they were making the move in the interest of the safety of their customers, and would accommodate renters with alternate vehicles, even for Toyotas not on the recall list.
The move idles about 20,000 vehicles in the Avis and Budget group fleet, and affects about four percent of cars rented by Enterprise Holdings, which owns Alamo, National, and Enterprise. Enterprise has also suspended sales of cars included in the recall.
In a related move, it’s also getting harder to lease a recalled Toyota. LeaseTrader, a company that puts together drivers who want to get out of a lease with others seeking the same model, has announced it has suspended doing deals on recalled models until documentation is provided proving repairs have been made.
