2009-2010 Toyota Corolla.
Toyota has expanded its safety recalls by another 1,093,000 vehicles, as of late Wednesday. In an official statement, Toyota declared that it had “sent a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration amending Toyota’s Defect Information Report of October 5, 2009 regarding the potential risk for floor mat entrapment of accelerator pedals in certain Toyota and Lexus models.”

The expanded floor mat recall now includes:

  • 2009-2010 Corolla
  • 2008-2010 Highlander
  • 2009-2010 Matrix
  • 2009-2010 Venza
  • 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe

This recall expands on the fall recall of 3.8 million cars to modify gas pedals, carpets, and software and supplements the recent sticking accelerator recall.

This latest extension adds a million vehicles to the queue to have their accelerator pedals modified or replaced to reduce the risk of floor mat entrapment. For some models, Toyota may also modify the floor surface. For now, dealers have been instructed on how to reshape the pedal. Once replacement parts become available, dealers will be able to replace the modified original pedal with a new one.

In addition, any existing Toyota all-weather floor mat with the recalled models can be replaced with a new mat with an updated design.
