It turns out Toyota isn’t the only Japanese automaker experiencing multiple recalls these days. In the midst of the Toyota recall blitz, Honda announced it is expanding its recall of 2001 and 2002 Accords to other models to fix a problem with the air bags due to risk of injury or death. There have been 12 incidents and one death, according to Honda.
Honda initially recalled a few 2001 Accords and Civics for the problem in November 2008 and expanded the recall last June to include more than 440,000 vehicles, including some Acura TLs. Honda says, “…we cannot be completely certain that the driver's airbag inflator in the vehicles being added to this recall at this time will perform as designed.” Therefore, the company is now expanding the recall to include more 2001 Accords, plus 2002 Accords, Civics, CR-Vs, Odysseys, and some Acura TLs.
In the affected vehicles, the driver’s side air bag inflator could develop excessive internal pressure, bursting the airbag inflator unit and sending metal parts through the air bag and into the passenger compartment.
Honda is sending recall notifications this month; it's important that owners bring the vehicles in promptly to the local dealership to have the work performed.
Earlier this month, Honda recalled certain 2007-2008 Fits to address a power-window switch that may overheat when damaged or exposed to water, leading to failure, smoking, melting, and even fire.
