To give us a taste of summer, Suzuki is showing a new outdoor/beach concept vehicle at the New York auto show. The Suzuki Makai is a bright orange hatchback with all the features necessary to drive to the beach with the sun and wind in your hair. On the open top are two custom surfboards attached to a mounting rack that looks to serve as a makeshift roof.
The seats are ventilated and reminiscent of vintage wide-strapped beach chairs, but these are in more upscale leather. They appear to be suspended in the vehicle, which adds to the open and airy feel. The console has an integrated Garmin GPS and simple controls on the dash.
The center rail between the driver and passenger seats extends to the rear in a swooping design, but limits the rear seats to only two.
The open-air design eliminates the need for door handles on the outside, but you can easily reach in to open the door.
The idea for the Makai is interesting and reminiscent of Mini’s Beachcomber concept that was shown in Detroit, but that concept has transformed into the Mini Countryman. No word yet if this fanciful Suzuki is a precursor to production convertible.
