New crash test ratings: Infiniti M37/M56, Lexus HS 250h, Toyota 4Runner
Mar 10, 2010 9:40 AM

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has tested three new models in its crash tests, and the Infiniti M37/M56, Lexus HS 250h, and Toyota 4Runner all earned the highest rating of Good in the frontal offset test.

Ahead of its official on-sale date, the new 2011 Infiniti M37 and M56 luxury sedans have earned a score of Good in both the IIHS front- and side-crash tests. The outgoing M has been among our top-rated sedans with a powerful engine, good handling and braking, and a comfortable ride. The previous generation also earned Good in the frontal and side IIHS tests. The redesigned M is set to go on sale March 18th. For more on the new Infiniti M, see our preview.

The 2010 Lexus HS 250h, a small upscale hybrid sedan earns a Good rating for frontal crash protection. No side test was conducted. The HS is equipped with front- and rear- head curtain air bags and front- and rear-seat-mounted torso air bags, as well as driver and front passenger knee air bags. The hybrid is a quieter, quicker, and more luxurious vehicle than the Toyota Prius. Fuel economy is 31 mpg overall, but its efficiency falls short of the Prius, Camry hybrid, and Ford Fusion hybrid. For more on the HS hybrid, see our model overview.

The redesigned 2010 Toyota 4Runner has also scored a Good in front crash protection. Side-impact tests were not conducted. This midsized SUV has been one of the better SUVs fit for serious off-roading. We recently purchased a 4Runner (See “From the logbook: 2010 Toyota 4Runner”) and will be putting it through our tests in the coming weeks.
