Test complete: 2010 Subaru Outback
Jun 17, 2010 12:10 PM

A cross between a wagon and SUV, the Subaru Outback is a popular vehicle choice for buyers who want a versatile vehicle with all-wheel-drive. Subaru redesigned the Outback for 2010, addressing the previous generation’s low fuel economy for its class, tight interior space, and emergency handling. So, have these fixes improved the popular Outback?

The redesign brings many welcome changes. The rear seat is now spacious and comfortable and fuel economy has improved to 24 mpg overall with the addition of the CVT transmission (up from 21 mpg in the last generation).

Even though there have been improvements, the Outback still has a few flaws. For instance, the base 170-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine has better acceleration than the previous version, but it’s still just adequate. The optional six-cylinder engine is quieter and quicker, but not as fuel efficient. Handling is responsive in routine driving, but a little clumsy at its limits and the standard stability control is slow to kick in.

On the plus side, a roomy cabin with a tilt-and-telescope wheel helps the driver find a good driving position and the large windows are good for visibility. Further, crash test results are excellent and the Outback earns the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick award for 2010.
