Warning: This video will scare the text out of you
Aug 3, 2010 4:14 PM
In the past year, there has been rapid progress in advancing the awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. So far, text messaging is banned in 27 states and the District of Columbia, with three more state laws going into effect in the coming months. By now, all drivers should be aware that cell phone use in any way behind the wheel creates risk to passengers, other motorists, and pedestrians.

But apparently not. Leaving Consumers Union headquarters last evening, a driver holding a phone to their head drove through a Stop sign at the edge of the property. A block away, the same scenario repeated. It seems the message hasn't reached everyone, and it is time for stronger medicine. With the featured video, and those mentioned below, I would caution that viewer discretion is advised, and more directly, none of these videos are intended for children.

Last year, we blogged about the disturbing, but effective, anti-texting video created by Gwent Police Department. (You can see the video here.)  Since then, we have seen many effective public service announcements on YouTube, including the vintage 1959 Ohio State Highway Patrol safety film "Signal 30" that has been used to shock many driver's ed classes. (Consequently, I have never driven more cautiously in my life.)

The "Drive Safely" video embedded here is among the most heart-wrenching we have seen, as it combines many effective, graphic videos into one with a haunting Evanescence soundtrack. (Again, view with caution.)

After watching even a portion of this video, I hope you drive more cautiously, being respectful of the lives around and mindful of how your behavior can impact others. No appointment—and no phone call—is worth the tragedy that traveling too fast or driving distracted can lead to.
