More than six in 10 Americans say that taking a vacation is important this year, despite the high cost of travel. Of those who plan to travel, 71 percent predicted that they would pay more than last summer to cover the cost of transportation, according to a new Gallup poll.
This compares with 39 percent who said they would spend more on transportation last year at this time when average gas prices were closer to $2.80 a gallon. When compared to last year’s responses to the same poll, there was little change in the number of people who still said they planned on traveling less.
Gallup recently found that only 8 percent of Americans mentioned gas prices as the most important problem facing the country today. This is up from last year at this time, but remains well below the 25 percent of Americans who said this was the top problem facing the country in the summer of 2008, when gas prices reached past $4 a gallon.
