Patriotic fervor spreads across the land as the nation counts down to Independence Day. And as families break out their red, white, and blues, many consumers may be inclined to shop for an American car this holiday, over a weekend known as much for fireworks as car sales. To help those looking to save money when shopping for a car made in the USA, we have compiled a list of the Best July 4th deals on American-made cars.
When it comes to buying an American-made car, it starts with a debate on how to define “American.” As we explored in a recent blog, parts content is one way to measure how American a car is, but even that leaves much of the story untold, as it doesn’t account for design, engineering, and manufacturing.
The reality is, the auto industry has become truly global. Most major automakers have factories in the United States, and traditional American brands build many of their cars outside our borders. For this story, we focused on where the vehicles are assembled. Hence, “American made”--vehicles actually built by your family, friends and neighbors--is the focus.
The list has been compiled by Consumer Reports Auto Price Services, which continuously monitors sales incentives--both customer rebates and unadvertised dealer incentives--for calculating the Bottom Line Price included in every CR New Car Price Report.
The team identified 39 vehicles from Acura, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Hyundai, Infiniti, Kia, Lincoln, Mazda, Nissan, and Toyota with potential savings from 5 to well over 20 percent off MSRP.
In years past, significant savings were common, but the auto market this year is topsy-turvy due to myriad economic and production factors. That said, these are the best nationwide deals we are seeing on cars recommended by Consumer Reports from among 115 models built in the United States. These are good, all-around vehicles that have performed well in our road tests, have average or better reliability, and have performed adequately if tested in government or insurance industry crash tests.
You may find even more negotiation room when factoring local incentives. Our recently improved car pricing service can provide that information by zip code, showing what the average local transaction price is for a given model and trim, while also revealing the theoretical lowest amount a dealership can accept.
If you’d rather not spend the weekend haggling, consider using Consumer Reports’ Build & Buy program. Available through the car model pages at ConsumerReports.org, the no-charge Build & Buy service provides guaranteed price quotes from local dealers who are held accountable for high customer satisfaction.
