After 12 long years, Saab finally redesigned the 9-5 sedan. This new, sleeker 9-5 shares engines and underpinnings with the competent and enjoyable Buick LaCrosse and Regal, its former cousins at General Motors. But our testing shows that the 9-5 doesn't measure up to similarly priced competitors, or even those Buicks.
Competing against laudable sedans from Audi, BMW, Infiniti, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz, there is a high level of expectations in this class. Unfortunately, the Saab falls short. The ride is stiff, cockpit cramped, and visibility compromised.
Further, the 220-hp, 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine is weak and noisy. Hence, it serves up only acceptable performance. Worse, even with only four cylinders, it is not thrifty and requires premium fuel.
To be fair, the 9-5 has some positive qualities, such as fit and finish, handling, and trunk space. But it's relatively expensive for what you get.
Beyond our test findings, the uncertain future of the automaker should give consumers pause before committing to a purchase. (Read: "Should I buy a Saab?")
