By the looks of it, Kia may be adding a big coupe-like sedan to its lineup. The Korean automaker unveiled the GT concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week, a long-sleek, rear-wheel-drive coupe powered by a turbocharged V6 engine.
The concept car has rear-hinged, “suicide” style doors with no pillars separating the front and rear doors. This creates a wide side aperture. The rakish roofline is reminiscent of some current sedans sacrificing some function for style, reminding us of cars such as the Audi A7, Mercedes-Benz CLS, and Volkswagen CC.
Its engine is a turbocharged 3.3-liter version of corporate parent Hyundai’s V6 standard-issue V6. The platform likely also comes from Hyundai’s Genesis lineup, which features a sporty coupe and a large sedan.
A touch of showmanship can be seen in boxy winglets floating in front of the headlights, a copper arch accenting the roofline, and a three-layer glass touch-screen instrument panel that moves all the controls off the center console.
A distinctive, exciting design, such a car could bolster Kia’s image and bring a new audience to its showrooms. Should the GT motor its way to production, we expect to see it at a stateside event this auto show season.
