Lexus has unveiled the 2013 GS 450h at the Frankfurt Motor Show, a luxury sedan with numerous updates to bolster fuel economy, while claiming to deliver spirited performance.

The GS 450h follows the introduction of the redesigned GS sedan in August at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

One criticism of our test of the previous-generation GS was that fuel economy returned only 23 mpg. Lexus promises an increase of over 30 percent with this new model mostly due to changes in the powertrain. The GS will be powered by a V6 engine and two-electric motors in the rear, producing a combined 338 hp. There is a drive mode selector where the driver can select Eco, Sport, Sport+, and EV modes. Lexus claims the GS will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds, making it muscle-car quick. The suspension system has also been enhanced to improve handling.

Optional features include a pre-collision system and an infrared camera to monitor the driver’s eyes to see if the driver will respond to an imminent collision. If not, the system will initiate an earlier warning or brake to lessen the possible impact. Like the GS sedan, the hybrid will also be available with night vision, heads-up display, blind-spot monitor, and lane assist.
