As a result of Chrysler Corp. divorce from Mercedes-Benz, Ddoge lost the Sprinter commercial van leaving a hole in automaker's portfolio. Enter new partner Fiat with a solution, the Fiat Doblo.
Fiat will supply the Doblo to Chrysler Corp. for sale in Canada and the United States under the Ram brand. The Doblo is assembled in Turkey, just like the Ford Transit Connect, another Euro-style compact urban commercial van. Exports will begin in early 2013.
The Doblo is currently offered in five-passenger, seven-passenger, and cargo van configurations. It can be fitted with a choice of three four-cylinder powertrains: 1.4-liter gasoline, 1.6-liter diesel, and 2.0-liter diesel. Compared to typical, full-size vans sold in the United States, the Doblo promises to be fuel efficient, with the small-displacement diesels providing generous torque and promising long intervals between servicing. But it won’t have the load capacity of the Sprinter.
As the on-sale date draws closer, we’ll learn more about Doblo for our market. But for now, suffice to say, the Chrysler family eagerly awaits this new addition.
