With the year-end shopping season fast approaching, Magellan showed its latest products at the Holiday Spectacular event this week in New York City. Here’s a quick rundown on what we saw, including a connected GPS device, a large-screen model for RV drivers, and a back-up camera compatible with their navigation units.
RoadMate 5175T-LM $300
This recently introduced navigator is Magellan’s first connected device, allowing users to browse the Internet for destinations, businesses, and other points of interest using a Wi-Fi connection. It also enables lifetime free map and software updates to the unit. With a large five-inch touchscreen that is viewable in either portrait or landscape mode, other features include free lifetime traffic information, a TourDirector feature for selecting destinations and mapping trips, AAA tourbook, lane assistance, highway exit POI guide, spoken street names, pedestrian mode, and maps of the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
RoadMate Pro 9165T $400
Designed for drivers of recreational vehicles, the 9165T factors in vehicle length, width, and weight when calculating routes, rather than having a more arbitrary truck mode. It features an oversized seven-inch screen, heavy duty mount, free lifetime traffic information, highway lane assist, and Bluetooth capability for hands-free calls. RV-friendly features include campground information with 11,700 listings from the Trailer Life directory, Good Sam campground discount information, and an audio/video port for connecting electronic devices.
Wireless back-up camera $150
Using a rear license plate mounted camera and compatible Magellan navigator, the wireless camera automatically switches the GPS unit’s screen from navigation to rearview mode whenever the driver shifts to reverse. Magellan says the camera has a 45-foot range, 120-degree angle view, and is compatible with any Magellan navigator equipped with a seven-inch screen, including the 9165T for recreational vehicles described above.
We plan to purchase these navigators for our next GPS test group and post results in time for holiday shopping. Stay tuned.
