The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Ford have issued a recall alert for 2010-2011 model year Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan sedans. The vehicles may have faulty wheel studs that may fracture and possibly cause the wheels to separate from the cars, increasing the likelihood of a collision.
According to the release, the problem may affect as many as 128,616 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan cars equipped with 17-inch steel wheels which were built in April 2009 and from December 2009 through November 2010.
Ford will notify owners affected by this recall to bring their Fusion or Milan sedans to local dealers. Mechanics there will replace all the vehicles' wheel lug nuts as well as inspect and, if necessary, replace the rear disc brakes for free.
Ford expects to begin the safety recall on January 24, 2012.
