The Cadillac Escalade is popular. In fact, it is so popular with car thieves that it tops the latest car theft report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), carrying the distinction of being stolen six times more frequently than the average car and resulting in losses that are 10 times greater. Thieves may have their lock picks and tow trucks, but Cadillac is responding for with enhanced security technology for 2012 that promises to thwart even the most ardent felon.

General Motors responded to the news from IIHS by noting that the 2012 Escalade has a “more robust” steering column lock system, and it would be available with a shock sensor and inclination sensor that would be triggered by towing, or even jacking the vehicle.

Now the automaker cites other theft prevention systems, such as its latest smart-key ignition system (PASS Key 3+), to deter drive-away thefts.

New wheel locks help prevent the wheels and tires from being stolen.

And the OnStar telematics system features a remote ignition lock, and should the vehicle be stolen, the vehicle can be tracked and even slowed down to enable to authorities to apprehend the larcenists.

Time will tell if these security measures tips the odds in drivers’ favor, or if somehow the thieves step up their game.

Drivers of all cars can deter theft with their habits, starting with parking in safe, well-lit areas at night, always locking the doors and closing windows, and hiding any valuables, such as a portable navigator or phone.
