Honda has a lot riding on its next-generation CR-V, as it updates the best-selling small SUV in America. The automaker has had a few stumbles recently, and it really can’t afford to get this one wrong.

Over the last few years, many new Hondas haven’t impressed us. Check out our evaluations of the Civic, Crosstour, CR-Z, and Insight to see what I mean. In fact, even the sporty Civic Si isn’t as exciting as the previous generation.

Consumer Reports readers have loved the CR-V for years, as evidenced by it being one of the most researched models (both new and used) on our website last year. And that isn’t surprising, as it’s routinely been one of CR’s top-Rated small SUVs.

To take measure of this significant new model, we recently purchased an all-wheel drive EX with a 185-hp four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission. This well-equipped, midlevel tester set us back $26,455.

Past CR-Vs have always been competitive in their class, with a refined powertrain, nice ride and handling balance, a flexible and functional cabin, and an accommodating rear seat. And subscribers have reported excellent reliability.

So far, we are relieved that the new CR-V doesn’t seem to have been downgraded, like the latest Civic. We’ll reserve further judgments till we put more miles on it.

However, the video below provides a first look based on a CR-V that Honda lent us back in November.

Stay tuned for the complete evaluation on our purchased CR-V, as well as updates along the way.
