In a recent survey of subscribers to ConsumerReports.org, 13 percent of those who had gotten rid of a point-and-shoot camera had disposed of it by throwing it in the trash.

Here are some far more environmentally responsible ways to dispose of a working digital camera you no longer need:

Give it away. If you don’t have a friend or relative who could use the camera, consider donating it to a worthy cause. At Recycling For Charities, there are dozens of charitable organizations to choose from.

Sell it. If the camera isn’t very old, you may be able to get some cash for it at eBay or your local Craigslist.

Recycle it. The site E-cycling Central provides state-by-state listings of electronics recycling programs.

Recycle the batteries separately. For recycling programs geared to the kinds of batteries found in cameras and other electronics devices. go to the Rechargeable Recycling Battery Corporation.
