On June 12th, one month from today, all full-power TV stations will stop sending analog signals over-the-air and transmit only digital signals. If you or a parent or neighbor get your TV signals from an antenna, you’ll need a digital television or a digital converter box for an analog TV to keep getting free TV. You may also need a new antenna.
Don’t be misled: Confusing ads notwithstanding, you do NOT need to subscribe to cable or satellite service to continue getting basic TV broadcasts at no cost. Our colleagues on the CR Money Blog point to a Cablevision ad masquerading as a public service announcement—which has been around, and criticized, since last year. The company offers a “deal” to those who want to sign up for cable service, but when editor Tony Giorgianni called, they offered him a $53-a-month plan that climbs to $73 after the first year. It took a good amount of probing to get the rep to even mention their cheapest basic plan ($17 a month, plus a $34 installation fee).
