According to some reports out of Japan, Toshiba plans to start selling 3D TVs that don't require special glasses by the end of the year. A spokesman for the company here in the U.S. said that it wasn't ready to make an announcement. UPDATE: The company provided this comment: “We are developing 3D TVs without the need for glasses, but cannot comment further as we have yet to decide upon when to commercialize such a product, concrete specifications, or any other details.”
Information at this point is sketchy; according to the report in a Japanese newspaper, Toshiba has developed a 3D technology that emits a number of rays of light with various angles from the screen, enabling viewers to see stereoscopic images without glasses. Previously the company has a shown a "multi-parallax" glasses-free 3D technology for use in mobile devices.
Earlier this year, Toshiba said it would sell 3D TVs using the Cell processor technology it co-developed for Sony's PlayStation3 videogame system, but that project has apparently been delayed or put on hold. We're trying to get more information from the company on its plans for 3D TVs, so check back with our blog for any updates.
