New Intel dual-core Atom processor promises more powerful netbooks
Aug 24, 2010 9:00 AM

Intel just announced that a variety of netbooks running a new, dual-core processor (the Atom N550) are available in stores. This announcement gives a potential boost to netbooks at a time when the iPad has been giving them stiff competition.

We'll buy and test netbooks that include the new processor as soon as we can. Based on the information provided by Intel, we'd expect those models to offer better performance than their predecessors, though how much better remains to be seen. We'd also expect their battery life to be comparable to the battery life we've seen on past netbooks (Ratings available to subscribers), typically in the range of 6 to 9 hours.

Stay tuned for detailed results when we have put new netbooks through our lab tests.
