Sony announced in Japan today the successor to the PSP handheld gaming device, code-named the "NGP" (for "next-generation portable"), which it says will rival the graphical power of its console gaming platform, the PlayStation 3. While the company hasn't yet released pricing information or a specific availability date, Sony said the NGP should ship before the end of 2011.
The NPG will incorporate some new features that will allow for new gaming possibilities. On front is a multi-touch 5-inch organic light emitting display (OLED), but there's also a multi-touch rear pad. It also will have dual analog controller sticks, both a front and a rear camera, and built-in Wi-Fi and 3G as well as three motion sensors: a gyroscope, an accelerometer, and an electronic compass. No information on battery life is yet available.
The NGP will use dedicated flash memory cards (instead of the UMDs used by the PSP) for full games and add-on game content and to save data. It will be able to access the PlayStation Network, including LiveArea, a new interface that will be a hub page for games and let players move easily within the network.
If you’d rather stick with gaming on your smart phone or tablet computer, Sony also announced PlayStation Suite, a unified gaming platform for Android 2.3 (the OS codenamed “Gingerbread) that should become available later this year.
Nintendo recently revealed details on its next-gen portable gaming device, the Nintendo 3DS, at a press conference in New York.
