One year after Facebook overhauled its privacy controls to make them easier to use, roughly one in five active U.S. Facebook users still hadn’t used the controls, according to a report just published in the June issue of Consumer Reports.
The 2011 Consumer Reports State of the Net Survey, upon which the report is based, also found that two-thirds of the active Facebook users who didn’t use privacy controls didn’t know either that the controls existed or how to access them.
While roughly one in five of those who didn’t use the controls ignored them primarily because they thought they didn’t need them, the fact that so many other Facebook users are still in the dark about the controls is troubling.
These findings suggest that Facebook needs to further step up its efforts to inform users about the controls and make it easier to access them.
More of the survey results, as well as advice on how to protect yourself, can be found in the report, the June issue of Consumer Reports, and on ConsumerReports.org.
