If you're looking for a new TV, make sure you check out our latest TV Ratings (available to subscribers), which have just been posted. We tested 16 new LCD and plasma TVs, including a new passive-3D LCD TV from LG (47LW5600), the second such set we've tested. (The other, from Vizio, is also in the Ratings.)
Although we posted our initial impressions of the set's 3D capabilities, our Ratings reflect how well the TV did with regular HD fare, which is likely how you'll be using the set the majority of the time.
There are also more Internet-capable TVs in our newest Ratings, as well as two new "Smart TVs" from LG and Samsung. Although many new TVs allow you to access extra online content, Smart TVs go a step further by including a full, unlimited Web browser. They also provide access to an app marketplace where you can find free and paid apps that can be downloaded to the TV, as well as more sophisticated ways of searching for and organizing all the content the TV is capable of receiving.
We also just tested new active 3D LCD and plasma TVs. Among the former are sets from Samsung—a 55-inch model in its flagship D8000 series—and a 46-inch set from Sharp (LC-46LE835U), a model that uses its four-color Quattron technology. Among the new plasma sets are two 3D models from LG, including a 42-inch PW350-series 720p set that, at $800, is one of the most affordable 3D sets we've ever tested.
Other tested sets include LCD TVs from JVC (LT-46E910), Panasonic (TC-L42U30), Sony (Bravia KDL-40EX520 and Bravia KDL-46EX523), Toshiba (32C110), Viewsonic (VT4210LED), and Westinghouse (LD-3260).
Newly tested plasma models include TVs from LG (50PT350), Panasonic (TC-P50S30 and TC-P42X3), and Samsung (PN43D450).
While we've just completed testing on these models, we're already hard at work evaluating a new group of TVs, so check back here soon for an report on what's in our test labs.
