Verizon ends unlimited wireless data plans on July 7
Jun 21, 2011 10:35 AM

Verizon Wireless will stop offering customers its monthly unlimited mobile data plans, as we previously reported. And DroidLife reported yesterday that Verizon has put an official date to the end of all-you-can-eat data: July 7.

According to the site, new customers that sign up for Verizon service will be offered a range of so-called tiered data plans. Replacing the $30 monthly unlimited data plans are:

  • 2GB for $30 per month
  • 5GB for $50 per month
  • 10GB for $80 per month

Tethering now adds $20 per month for an additional 2GB of data. A customer on the base plan who uses a Verizon phone as a computer modem, for example, would then pay $50 per month for 4GB of data.

Plans for tablet computers will also rise from $10 to $30 per month. But the bump also comes with a data cap that's been doubled to 2GB per month

Subscribers who go over their allotted data limits will be assessed an overage fee of $10 per gigabyte.

A Verizon spokesperson confirmed to All Things D that the company was indeed moving toward "a more usage based model in July." Engadget and several other tech websites also received electronics copies of an internal Verizon e-mail that confirms the switch to tiered plans. The message to Verizon employees said in part:

Data usage has more than doubled over the last three years. Consumers and business users alike are doing more and more with their mobile devices...As a result, we are evolving our approach around how we package our data solutions and pricing to our customers. Coming soon, Verizon Wireless will move from our existing pricing format to a structure designed to allow customers to choose the right data solution that best aligns with their needs.

What do you think? If you're shopping for a new smart phone or tablet, will the change in plans have you thinking twice about moving to Verizon?
