Spotify opens its online website to users in the U.S. today. The music streaming service, which will compete against the likes of Pandora and Last.fm, offers yet another option to listen to tunes from the Web on a free or a pay plan.
As we've previously reported, Spotify has secured licensing deals with all four major U.S, music labels to offer U.S. customers unlimited online access to music. Like its European service, Spotify offers Americans three service plans.
The free version, which is currently still by invitation-only, will allow subscribers to stream music—with online ads—to their PCs or Macs. A $5 per month plan does away with the ads. The top tier plan, for $10 per month, will allow Spotify subscribers to access—and save—tunes on their computers as well as tablets and smart phones.
Consumer Reports experts have gotten their invites to try Spotify. We'll weigh in soon with further details on how the new music streaming service works and if it's a worthy competitor to the plethora of online music services.
