YouTube adds online video-editing tools
Sep 15, 2011 11:20 AM

For amateur videographers (or experts who are in a hurry), YouTube has added some basic video-editing features to its hosting and sharing services. You can edit newly uploaded videos, and you can also fix existing ones without losing their ID numbers, inbound links, and comments.

So what can you do with YouTube’s editing tools? You can stabilize shaky videos, rotate videos, and adjust contrast, saturation, and color temperatures, and an "I'm Feeling Lucky" button adjusts color for you in one click. If you’re not happy with the footage at the beginning or end of your video, you can trim it.

You can also add effects, including black-and-white, sepia, cartoon, and heat map. An Audio feature lets you swap out your sound for free tracks supplied by YouTube. You can’t undo step by step, but if you’re not happy with your final result, you can revert your video to its original state.

The tools couldn’t be simpler to use, and changes kick in quickly. Image stabilization in particular will make a lot of homemade videos easier to watch. (But hopefully, folks will take it easy on the more psychedelic effects...)
