Verizon Wireless deals with cable companies investigated
Dec 20, 2011 4:00 PM

The antitrust division of the U.S. Department of Justice is currently investigating deals Verizon Wireless made with cable companies to acquire more spectrum, according to a report by Businessweek.

Verizon Wireless recently made a deal with cable provider Cox to buy $315 million worth of advanced wireless spectrum, and in doing so offer Cox cable customers access to Verizon Wireless devices and services. This deal followed another Verizon Wireless made with Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks to buy wireless spectrum collectively held by those companies, which like the Cox sale, would offer Verizon Wireless services to those companies' subscribers.

Businessweek reports that the Justice Department investigation will determine whether or not these transactions "concentrate too much control of airwaves in one company’s hands and whether the marketing agreements between Verizon and the cable companies violate antitrust laws."
