Nikon is keeping in step with digital-camera trends by offering models with longer zooms: Of the nine new point-and-shoot Coolpix models announced today, four have lenses with zoom ranges of 10x or greater. The longest is on the Coolpix P510, $430, which has an ultra-long 42x zoom (equivalent to 24mm wide angle to 1000mm telephoto).
At the moment, that's the longest zoom range on the market for a point-and-shoot, supplanting the 36x zoom found on the Olympus SP-810UZ. The P510 also has a swiveling 3-inch display and can fire off five shots per second.
Another camera, the Coolpix S9300, $350, along with the Coolpix P510, includes a GPS function, which is becoming a popular feature. And the Coolpix S30, $120, is a rugged model that's supposed to be waterproof to a depth of about 10 feet and able to withstand a 2.6-foot drop.
In one respect, Nikon is breaking with what other camera makers are doing. Three of the new models—the Nikon Coolpix L810 ($280), L26 ($120) and S30 ($120)—accept AA batteries instead of a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
These new Coolpix models will be available in February.
