Ever wondered what was really going on when Microsoft pulled the plug on its Zune music players? Based on news coming out of the company's press conference at the big E3 video-game trade show this week, the Zune brand is now completely dead and is being replaced by a new service called Xbox Music.

Details about Xbox Music are still scarce, but the company says it will be available on not just the Xbox 360 console but Windows 8 computers, tablets, and phones as well. According to one executive, the service will have 30 million tracks in its library at launch, as well as some new social-media elements that will all users to share music.

In its 3E3 keynote, Microsoft also officially announced Smart Glass, a platform that lets Xbox 360 owners stream video and other media from their mobile devices to their big-screen TVs.
