Study: Hot drinks help treat a cold
Dec 10, 2008 8:44 PM

Hot liquids aren't just your grandmother's cure for a cold. Now, researchers at Cardiff University in the UK say hot drinks may help reduce cold and flu symptoms. In a new study, the researchers compared the effects of cordial—an apple and black currant drink—at either room temperature or "hot" on 30 volunteers with cold or flu symptoms. The hot drink provided immediate and sustained relief from symptoms of runny nose, cough, sneezing, sore throat, chilliness and tiredness, whereas the same drink at room temperature only provided relief from symptoms of runny nose, cough and sneezing.

We reported, in June, on the symptom-reducing effects of chicken noodle soup on a cold. Studies show that chicken noodle soup can reduce symptoms, although it doesn't appear to prevent or shorten the illness. Inhaling the warm steam of the soup loosens nasal secretions, which helps drain sinuses. The soup's heat may also ease throat soreness, and the broth helps prevent dehydration.
