Yesterday, we reported on the Food and Drug Administration's third recall of pistachio nuts in less than a week. The FDA is now recommending that consumers avoid eating pistachios until further notice due to the risk of salmonella. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Thus far, several illnesses have been reported by consumers that may be associated with the pistachios. It is not yet known whether any of the salmonella strains found in the pistachio products are linked to an outbreak.
Follow the latest developments in the pistachio investigation on our Safety blog, and for information on affected products, see the FDA's Web site.
