With the nation's unemployment rate rising to its highest levels in more than 25 years, many families are at risk of losing their employer-sponsored health coverage. A new brief from the Kaiser Family Foundation examines the COBRA provisions of the stimulus legislation known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and answers key questions about how they would work, who might benefit, and how they interact with other laws and programs helping people obtain and maintain health coverage. The brief also looks at potential limitations of the new legislation that would make it difficult for some newly unemployed workers to maintain their coverage.
