Hey, big spender. How much are you shelling out on Rx drugs?
Apr 2, 2009 12:45 PM

Which prescription drugs were the biggest spenders on consumer advertising last year? You can probably guess some of them since they're aired on TV constantly, interrupting everything from your morning shows to Late Night with David Letterman. And don’t even mention how they clog up your favorite magazines. Here are the top 10 spenders in 2008, according to data from Nielsen Media Research:

1. GlaxoSmithKline's Advair (for asthma): $173 million spent on ads

2. Bristol-Myers Plavix (blood thinner for heart attack and stroke prevention): $170 million

3. Lilly's Cymbalta (for anxiety and depression): $157 million

4. Sanofi's Ambien CR (for insomnia): $155 million

5. Otsuka's Abilify (for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder): $152 million

6. Lilly's Cialis (for erectile dysfunction): $142 million

7. Pfizer's Lyrica (for fibromyalgia and seizures): $141 million

8. Pfizer's Viagra (for erectile dysfunction): $122 million

9. Boehringer's Flomax (for enlarged prostate): $116 million

10. Sepracor's Lunesta (for insomnia) $109 million

Excuse me, but now I'm a little depressed. Cymbalta, anyone?
