The Food and Drug Administration ordered this week that $1.3 million worth of dietary supplements marketed for use by body builders be destroyed. At the request of the FDA, U.S. Marshals seized more than 23,300 bottles of three dietary supplement products distributed by LG Sciences LLC, of Brighton, Mich. under the names Methyl 1-D, Methyl 1-D XL, and Formadrol Extreme XL. The agency found that the supplements contained unapproved food additives and/or ingredients, including steroids.
Tell your doctor is you use or have used Methyl 1-D, Methyl 1-D XL, or Formadrol Extreme XL. If you suspect a serious problem from using these supplements, see your doctor right away and report it to the FDA.
This latest action by the FDA comes after recalls of 30 weight-loss supplements last month because of dangerous ingredients, and of the popular weight-loss pill Hydroxycut earlier this month due to potential serious liver injuries. We reported last year on risky dietary supplements that contain hazardous ingredients linked to serious adverse effects. Some ingredients on our high-risk list include androstenedione and bitter orange, found in supplements used to boost athletic performance.
We advise staying away from all questionable supplements. When buying supplements, look for the U.S. Pharmacopeia's USP Verified mark, which assures that the product has the declared amount of ingredients, does not contain harmful levels of contaminants, and has passed other quality measures. And talk to your doctor about the supplements you use. Ask if they can interact harmfully with your prescription drugs. And let your doctor know if you experience worrisome symptoms after starting a supplement.
