Swine flu: Today's news
May 6, 2009 5:12 PM

The FDA announced today that it has approved a new manufacturing facility for flu vaccines. The facility will be located in the U.S., and owned and operated by Sanofi Pasteur, which currently manufactures Fluzone Influenza Virus Vaccine, a seasonal flu vaccine.

Richard Besser, M.D., Acting Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, answered questions from the press at 1:00 p.m. today. Here are the latest updates.

  • There are now 1,487 probable and confirmed cases in 44 states. The median age is 16 years, and 58 percent are under 18.
  • There have been 35 confirmed hospitalizations and another 17 from probable cases in 14 states. The median age of confirmed hospitalized cases is 15. Seven of 13 cases for which there is detailed information had underlying conditions that put them at greater risk.
  • It has been reported that the woman who died in Texas yesterday was 8 months pregnant. A successful cesarean section was performed before she died, according to CNN. It's unclear if pregnancy was the underlying health factor, or if there were other health factors at work. Very sad.

  • The CDC reports that there are six confirmed and five probable cases of swine flu infection involving pregnant women.
  • Seniors still seem to be accounting for fewer cases than the young. The CDC is not sure yet if it’s due to an underlying protection or immunity, or because the exposure began in younger populations.
  • Illinois has moved ahead of New York in confirmed cases. But these differences are more likely to come now from testing protocol and priorities than actual prevalence of disease.
