Our most recent tests were in 2007, but sparkling wines and Champagnes rarely bear vintage years, and producers aim for consistency. Whatever your choice, buy from a high-volume store with quick turnover to better your chances of getting a fresh bottle. We found six good choices, four are under $20, and two are a little pricier at $40 and $33 (based on New York City retail prices).
As you sip your glass (or two or three) of champagne or sparkling wine, it’s smart to be aware that overindulging can lead to a rocky start to the New Year—also known as the dreaded hangover. And while there’s no cure, other than avoiding alcohol in the first place, here are a few tips that can help you have a fun night without regretting it in the morning:
- Try not to drink on an empty stomach or when you’re worn out from exercise or lack of sleep.
- Drink lots of water while you’re celebrating and afterward too to ward off dehydration.
- Take a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB) to ease a headache, although it may upset a stomach already irritated by alcohol.
