Q. Are there any alternatives to Viagra that are sold over the counter?
A. None that we can safely recommend. Supplements that claim to enhance male sexual performance don't have to meet the same safety and efficacy standards as prescription medications. And many have been found to be contaminated with prescription drugs, including sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra. Even "natural" sex enhancers can be dangerous; the herb yohimbe, for example, can cause potentially fatal changes in heart rate and blood pressure. Since supplements can interact with prescription drugs, you should always tell your doctor which ones you currently take or plan to take.
