Space heaters add comfort with ease
October 4, 2007 10:36 AM

Spaceheaters Sales of space heaters are sizzling as millions of homeowners buy into the promise of lower-cost heating in an era of soaring utility bills.

The latest electric space heaters provide more-consistent heat than those we last tested. And while they're also safer than their predecessors, space heaters still account for 40 percent of the deaths and 30 percent of the injuries each year in this country that are heating related, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Fuel-fired models carry their own risks (read “Safety risks” for details on propane and kerosene heaters).

All of the tested space heaters will comfortably warm a chilly room. But remember, the only way to potentially save money is to use a heater in one room and leave the rest of the house chillier.

Among the key findings from our tests:

Temperature control is key. Most of the heaters controlled room temperature well. Eight models with a thermostat excelled, maintaining temperature within 3° F or less. Buy a space heater without one, and you'll have to turn it off at the desired temperature and on again to heat. Heaters with multiple output settings let you choose the lowest one that keeps a room comfortable, saving energy.

Safety varies among models. One space heater distinguishes itself with a sensor that turns off the unit when the grille is touched. A tip-over switch that shuts down a knocked-over heater is another desirable feature; five tested models lack one.

High-priced models disappoint. Two heaters earned the lowest overall scores. One provided only fair temperature control and ease of use. Its boast that it can cut heating bills by up to half is questionable. The other, equipped with an air purifier, provided lackluster temperature control, cleaned the air poorly, and lacks an overheat-protection feature.

Follow the expert advice below and use our Ratings (available to subscribers) to find the model that’s right for your home:

Opt for convection or radiant. Convection electric space heaters, whether fan-forced or not, are best for heating an entire room. Radiant electric space heaters use an electric-ribbon element or a quartz tube, and are ideal for spot heating. But that heat quickly dissipates when the unit is off.

Assess portability. If your electric space heater will see duty in many rooms, you'll want a model that's easy to move. Most electrics are lighter than kerosene or propane models. Look for a handle that provides a safe grip.

Play it safe. Overloaded, undersized, or frayed power cords are a major cause of fires, injuries, and deaths associated with space heaters. Inspect your electric space heater's power cord to ensure it's in good condition. If you need to use an extension cord, get a 12- or 14-gauge model. All of the tested electric models have a power cord that's at least 70 inches long. A longer cord gives you greater flexibility in where you can place the heater.

Buy an electric space heater listed by Underwriters Laboratories, whose mark indicates it meets UL's voluntary safety standards. And consider a model with a tip-over switch and an automatic shutoff for overheat protection. Place your electric space heater at least 3 feet from furniture and window treatments and out of the reach of children or pets. And always turn off the heater when you go to bed or leave home.Helen A.S. Popkin

I would also like to know your comments on the Eden Pure quartz infared portable heater?

I too have received information on the Eden Pure portable heater and wanted to see if you have investigated.

I am also trying to find more information about the eden-pure quartz heater. I spoke to the manufacturer and they claim the energy output is low. Even on high continuously it would cost about 40.00 a month to run. Sounds to good to be true.

what is rating for the eden pure quartz infrared portable heaters???

I also would like information about the Eden-Pure Heater. I have received information on it and wonder if it's as good as they say.

Are there any heaters with a built in programmable timer?

We are looking to compare Sunheat,Edenroc, and other brands of portable infrared heating systems.

I am also searching for reports on the EdenPure Gen 3. Reviews of EdenPure on amazon.com were negative.

WHICH IS BETTER, EDEN PURE QUARTZ INFRARED PORTABLE HEATER VS. SUNHEAT INFRARED ZONE HEATING SYSTEM?

I also would like information about the Eden-Pure Heater. I have received information on it and wonder if it's as good as they say.

I'm interested in the Sunheat brand of infrared heaters. They are expensive and look to be very well made but I'm skeptical about their energy claims.

I would also like to know your comments on the Eden Pure quartz infared portable heater?

Please post information on Edenpure portable heaters. We are interested in purchasing one if it does what is advertised.

Please tell me what you know about the Eden-Pure Heater. I see Oreck has this type of heater as well.

Many claims have made by quartz infrared heaters about lowering heating cost. I have read through your information and found nothing on your ratings. Is it true that the quartz infred heaters are as great as they claim?

Thank you

I would also be interested to hear about the Eden Pure products.

I wanted to inquire if anyone purchased a Eden Pure portable heater and if they actually work and if they save on electric.

thanks

Edenpure,

First I have not seen the ads for Edenpure in the newspaper; althought it is my understanding that it was advertised in the news papers several times.

I first hear about Edenpure Gen 3 from my minister. His mother lives in an other part of the US and has one and is well pleased with it.

So I figued if it saves me a 100 gallons of oil this winter, it will pay for itself.

So I purchased one in September 2008. My home structure is a Tri-level (3) floors. On the lower level is a 12 x 22 family room, a small bathroom and a large utility room. I put the Edenpure on this level because (cold air drops) and it warms the rooms to a comfortable temperature on that level.

I was impressed with it and I have purchased the second one. Which I put on the second level: a dining room, living room, kitchen and a foyer.

My wife suffers with (RA) and cannot take a lot of cold air. She has told me several times that she believes it is going to do the job.

So far the coldest temperatures has been 32 degrees and I have not used my oil heat yet.

The January issue of Consumers report rated Edenpure down the list (16) of the units they tested.

I have not gotten my electric bill in order to evaluated the electric cost of operation.

This is not an endorsement for Edenpure, but an honest evaluation of my experience in the 7 weeks of owning the Edenpure Gen 3.

I hope that this helps.

I would like to hear more about Eden Pure Heaters. pros and cons

Jake,
Please share with us the results of your electric bill once you get it.
Your comments are very helpful
Pete

I would to review a rating on the eden pure heater.
thank You.

I would like to see a comparison between the EdenPure heater and the amish ones sold in the newspaper magazine. Which, if either is more efficient and which heats better.

My mom recently got a Eden Pure (after recommendations from neighbors) but now I am finding others online. Does anyone own or know anything about the iHeater? It looks almost like the Eden Pure but is $100 cheaper.

There is also 'Comfort Zone Infrared Heaters' but there's is more expensive but they do have a better repair cycle (they mail you the tubes and you can replace in less than 3 minutes).

I would like a listing of your best room heaters. eden pure and any others Eloise

I never owned a edenpure heater, but after reading these reviews(over 8 pages) i am convinced that this product is a scam for your money and should be investigated. -infomercial ratings-(dot) com and search for product edenpure heaters, your mind will be set about eden heaters, and another hint if they happen to block the address is to call edenpure heaters and talk to a custormer service rep (they should know about the product right?) i will let you decide

I have just been looking at the EdenPURE, Sunheat, ComfortZone, Suntwin and comparing them all. They seem to be quite similar in what they do, how they are built, and the pricing. My friend's neighbor owns the ComfortZone and says he loves it and they live in an old, leaky uninsulated apartment (converted victorian home. ComfortZone is out of Lakewood, CO. The EdenPURE is endorsed by Paul Harvey, whom I believe has endorsed some quality products in the past (i.e. Bose). I would say that ComfortZine and EdenPURE are quite tight in the competition. CR when are we gonna get this report on Infrared Heaters done? It's starting to get cold out here in Colorado!!

I recently purchased two Edenpure Gen 3 1000's. They are not a scam. They are incredible little heaters. People have had problems with the Gen 1 and 2, but from what I can tell they have all the bugs worked out. It puts out a lot of heat, it's easy to use, quiet. I have not had to turn it up to full, it keeps the entire level of my house warm. I know other people who own them and love them. I can't believe the negative comments I found online. I have recommended it to others and they all love it. I am going to get more for my family members

I too have been doing some research on these different types of infrared heaters. They seem to be very comparable to each other and promise efficiency. Does anyone know if they are indeed as efficient as they claim? (whether it is EdenPure, Sunheat, Comfort zone or whoever) Also, how long typically do the heat exchangers and quartz tubes last? How much $ to replace these items? Any answers would be much appreciated.

I have purchased 2 eden pure heaters, great results. 25 to 30 dollars to operate a month, works well, easy to maint (clean filters once a month). no complaints. worth every pennny.

I am interested in purchasing an infrared heater for my garage. I don't think that one of these would work, but it was the only infrared heater that I could find. I can't find any other information on the site (yes, I am a subscriber of the site). I am wondering if perhaps I am not looking in the right place or if you are planning to do any testing of garage heaters (infrared or other types) in the future.

Thanks,

Joe

I used an Eden Pure 1000XL Heater last winter. I have an 1100 square foot apartment. I have totally electric appliances and hot water. I did not use my baseboard electric heat.
My highest monthly Electric Bill was $104. Love the heater. Don't like the idea of having to ship it back to Canton, OH to have the infared bulbs replaced.
I'm told that CR tested it two years ago and it came in last.
How about testing the latest model??

I'm disappointed to have placed a new monthly subscription and have no specific information from Consumer's Report available. I'm looking for some rating/testing from Consumer's Report on the Eden Pure and all there is is information on space heaters in general and comments from other customers. Anything more to offer?

floor is cold, room is cold and want to buy a quartz heater that will heat floor and room...wondering which is the best?

Cr PLZ rate the infrared heaters on the market ASAP!! I've waited a long time for a rating and need to buy on Quick---REALLY cold in WI! I like the idea of the ORECK and/or ComfortZone. EdenPur has gotten a bad rap lately. ComfortZone has great service; Oreck is made in USA. Oreck's spec sheet has limited info but ORECK has always been synonomous with quality. What to do? PLZ don't wait until Jan--too late! Thanks.

Ü HI EVERYONE...

Hi. We purchased 2 Enviro Low profile portable heaters form home Depot 2 years ago w/o any instuction manuals in them, so we do not know how to keep it on. When we turn it on, hit the mode button for hours, it only goes to 1-10 hours, we hit "10" for 10 hours, wait for it to stop blinking, then the temp, we adjust it to 85* wait for it to stop blinking and then about 15 minutes later it stops working and starts to blink, and no more heat. It is so frustrating! Please if you can help us with some advice on how to work the MODE button, hours button, and the temperature button that would be greatly appreciated!!!!!Thank you so so much. Sincerely yours Claudia

Ü HI AGAIN!

Sorry that they did not print the one with the link in it, so here it is again.

EDENPURE HEATERS
http://www.infomercialratings.com/product/edenpure_heater_reviews

We subscribed to Consumer Report just to find out about the infrared, quartz, EdenPure etc heaters and they don't have any info at all!! I am very disappointed. CR Get on the ball- it's getting cold!!!

On 11/13/08 Lorraine posted that she found a link. What was the link. I'm battling breast cancer for the third time in five years. I'm doing chemo now and I could use a heater that would help me cut down on heating costs and keep me warm.

Most electric space heaters use around a MAX of 1500 watts per hour. You get about 5,000 BTUs. I had a quartz, had to replace the bulbs. I had the oil, heats slowly, but works great. I have a ceramic air heater now, cost $15 at Walmart, no maintenance costs, helps to heat a kitchen, bedroom, bathroom. We have a heat pump, set at 68, which is cost effective if the temp is 32 or higher. I save money when I use my space heaters when it's below 32. When the heat pump can't hold 68, our electic furnace kicks in and it sucks electric. That's when the space heater pays to operate. I can set the house at 65 at night, use a space heater in the warm 72 bedroom, and save money. I paid $15 bucks each for mine, others cost 200 or 300 or 400 bucks for the same heat, you choose.

I am trying to find out about the eden pure portable heater. Does it work is it energy effecient?

I am interested in the ratings and performance of the iHeater which is similar to the Edenpure. Any information out there on it?

I would like info on the edenpure quartz heaters please

LISTEN UP PEOPLE: DO NOT BE FOOLED BY MARKETING CLAIMS! When you walk into a store with a shelf full of electric heaters, guess what....they all produce the EXACT SAME AMOUNT OF HEAT. Radiant, Convection, Ceramic, Mica Panel...it doesn't matter, they all produce the same AMOUNT of heat. It is simple physics... a 1500 watt heater (that is max amount of energy consumption of ALL electric heaters, by law) will produce approximately 5119 BTU's. The reason for this is that electric heaters are ALL approximately 99% efficient. This means that almost all of the electricity being used by the heater is being used to produce HEAT. If you want a room to "feel" warm QUICKLY, close the doors to the room and use an electric heater with a built-in fan (like the cheap little cube "ceramic" heaters. In my opinion, these are the best value for the money. Now..... draw your own conclusions as to the value of an EdenPure versus a cheap little cube KNOWING that the EdenPure produces NO MORE HEAT than the little cube.

I am interested in the Oreck HeatWise space heater SF1500. Has anyone used one?

Consumer Reports rated the Edenpure infrared heater
low. Since there are several brands of infrared heaters
on the market today , I'd like to see Consumer Reports
rate the different brands of IR heaters in a separate
story taking into account how SAFE they are (infrared
energy exposure to the human body (eyes..cateracts ,etc)
and see if they ARE more efficient watt for watt in heating a room vs. a similar wattage regular resistant heating element heater.
Since the cost of heating can be quite high now,
I would think MANY people would be interested in
this research. I'm a contributor to CR and a regular
subscriber.

I also would like to hear more comments on the Eden Pure Heaters - pros and cons

A friend gave me a Calore Convection Electric Heater 793762, but I don't have user instructions. Can somebody help? and also is it safe to leave this model on during the day when we are not home?

If we don't leave the heater on, it takes almost a full day to warm up again? DO you have any suggestions and if I could get some help on operating this unit correctly, I would appreciate it.

Jennifer from Oct 20th. Did anyone ever get you information on your calore heater? I have a low profile and I am not able to get it work the same way all the time and still looking for a source for instructions for my unit given to me. When it works its great, otherwise I am very frutstrated.

Looking for more information on Sunheat infrared zone-heating systems

i too would be obliged if someone can forward the info. on the eden pure 1000 feet coverage heater. pls advise email address of katlovers08@verizon.net and thanx in advance. reg tom

what is the best and lowest energy cost space heater for about 600 sq ft. And safe around kids Thanks

I have an EdenPure Gen 3 that I have been using for 5 weeks in a 13X21 family room. It does not seem to be heating the room properly. Has anyone else had a problem with the Gen 3 in a similar space?

Isn't there anyway that you could post the COST of operating one of these heaters? You are good about telling us how many miles per gallon a car gets, how about telling us the cost of operating one of these heaters per kilowatt hour?

You did not test the Sunheat Infrared heater. They want $679 per unit for one. It would be really nice to see them tested and listed.
Thanks

do you have any information on the OPTIMUS space heater

I would like to see an article in Consumer Reports magazine that evaluates space heaters. There are two in particular that I have gotten a lot of mail on. One is the Eden Pure and the other is an Amish heater that is inserted into a mantle of three types of wood, although it is portable.

I would like definitive information on all space heaters but am particularly interested in these two.

Do you have any information on Infrared Heating systems.
Space heaters in general. Is it safe health wise not just pertaining to fires. Speaking of fires, are they as cool to the touch as they say.

What are the best brands to consider when buying one.

Do you recomend it as a good safe way to produce heat and save money on heating bills?

I see questions posted about Edenpure and other very expensive heaters.

Keep in mind that ALL resistive element electrical heaters, be they infared, quartz, ceramic, etc, etc have the SAME efficiency.
If they are designed to have a maximum 1500 watt power usage on a 120 volt line (and they all are), their output will be about 5120 BTU/hr. This is true no matter if they are the Edenpure or a $30 unit from Walmart or Home Depot. Claims that one is more efficient than another are pure marketing hype. Anything else violates the laws of physics.

At 1500 watts of power, hourly cost of operation here in Connecticut where electricity is expensive at $.20/kw/hr will be about $.30 per hour of use. That $7.20 per day for each day of continuous use, adding over $200/month to your electric bill.

The ony way an electric heater can save you money is to use it to spot heat a small room or area while turning down the temp on your main heating system. The inflated claims are based upon a distortion of this fact.

Doug.

We bought a eden pure heater at start of last winter. At the time we lived in an older two bedroom townhouse, 1190 sq ft., that was not insulated very well at all. Well we weren't sure if it was worth it, $400 that is, but sure enough it did just what it says it does. we only had to use our main heat two times all winter. It kept our townhouse at and comfy 68. And the air quality was not dry like usual heaters. It also cost less to run than our regular electric heat too. Now we have a gas powered home and find that is even cheaper for now that is. I do recommend this heater for anyone. I recently found out i work with a woman that has tree units for her larger home and she also loves it.

I like to know about the Eden Pure air purifier. Is it safe, and does it do the job.

My husband and I bought an EdenPure Gen 3 just before winter 08 our home is over 1400 sq.ft. It works great if we heat our long living room, huge kitchen, small dining room and wide/long hallway and keeping the bedroom (3) doors close with temps of 30's and up. It does a really nice even heat. It's nice if we just come home and don't feel like using the wood stove we turn on the EdenPure on and it heats pretty fast. We have baseboard heaters, but they are way too expensive to run. I would say we are happy consumers of the EdenPure Gen 3. Any questions email me at sasquatchteam@yahoo.com

My name is Brian Dempsy and I’m an aspiring student who just left the temperate climes of my hometown of Northridge, California for the bone-numbing weather only found at Boston University where I left in search of a BS in Management. Upon arriving last fall I soon realized that my dorm, while carpeted and self-contained, didn’t keep in heat during the waning throws of fall. This made me start really considering other options as the impending doom of winter loomed. I started asking around and some of my fellows were using a CZ Infrared 1000 model heater to warm their rooms. I have to admit, I was skeptical. I mean, how is a small and unassuming heater supposed to warm my entire 300 square foot dorm room? It didn’t seem possible. After a week of listening to the testimony of my peers, I finally got enough nerve to make that phone call to my parents to buy me the heater.

The unit arrived last month and man was it a life saver. Instead of focusing on staying warm, like I was doing, I can focus on cramming for exams and partying…the important staples in a young student’s life. The unit simply works. By producing an even, comfortable heat that warms my furniture versus the air in my environment, I can focus less on my room being an oven (like my friends do with their units) and more on my room being an comfy, inviting place to study and live. Thank you Comfort Zone for saving my collegiate career.

My name is Bobby Flanagan and I have a winter cabin upper Maine. For those who know anything about the harshness of Maine winters, they can be brutal. I searched for months for a heating solution to allow me to use less wood and save on fuel costs while up there during the holidays, and nothing seemed quite adequate. Then I came across infrared heating technology. I was attracted by the promise of supplementing lower-costing electricity with much higher propane costs for my winter cabin retreat. I started utilizing it in a zone-fashion with my normal propane system. This CZ Infrared 1500 heater allowed me to heat my great room much more cost-effectively during the cold winter months versus solely using my propane system. I love it. I can move it from room to room & it always heats my rooms evenly & comfortably. Thank you CZ for making my winter getaway and enjoyable retreat.

I've had an EdenPure XL1000 for 2 years now and it works well in our family room & living room. (about 900 sq ft) It keeps the room warm all day. I turn it on at 5:00am & the room goes from 62 or so to 70 by 7:00am. Our electric bills are much lower than before using it. It has safety controls in it. I forgot to clean the filter & it shut down until fixed the problem. We are pleased with it so far!

Good Morning, my name is Garrison Roberts. My wife and I just bought our first home 5 months ago…moving’ up and finally realizing the American Dream. So shortly thereafter we found that it could be very costly during the impending winter to pay the higher propane costs that heating a 1800 sq ft home is…we needed a better solution. So we looked around and found some friends using 2 CZ Infrared 1500P heaters to supplement their home heat. It seemed to do an excellent job in the main areas of their home. So I took the leap of faith and invested in 3 units...they do not disappoint whatsoever. We run our thermostat at a constant 55 F and supplement up to 75 degrees F in our living room, one in our kitchen/dining area, and one in our finished basement that is converted into an office/study. The units perform perfectly and we set them to delay start about 45 minutes prior to coming home for an even, comfortable heat. I run our 3 units for about 12 hours per day for the cost of $1.58 per day or less than $50.00 per month in electrical cost per unit. It has saved us hundreds in potential propane costs this heating season already. I am so glad that I took the leap of faith and decided to choose Infrared heat to keep my new home comfy and warm. Thank you, CZ Infrared.

Good Morning, I purchased my CZInfrared 1500WT last winter to keep my townhome warm and toasty because I found that using clean and efficient electricity was a better environmental option versus our propane heat in Medford, Oregon. Being an active participant in the security of this planet’s future, I abhor the use of fossil fuels in any fashion. The burning of fossil fuels creates unnecessary amounts of greenhouse gas in our volatile environment which threaten the stability of our ozone layer causing unnatural climate change and limiting the amount of oxygen that we breathe. Due to my concerns, I needed a better option to heat my home that is powered by solar panel technology that produces the electricity I use. While I do save inherently on my power from our local utility, it still makes sense to find an efficient option to heat my home during the height of winter. My CZInfrared heater allows me to do just that. I kept it on constantly this winter heating my living room, study, and bedroom depending upon where I was. It did a fantastic job of maintaining an even 72 F in all of these areas mentioned while being unassuming and blending into my wood-toned décor seamlessly. In fact, my only regret was that I had only purchased one between all rooms in my home. Next year, before the big winter hits my local area, I plan to buy 2 more CZ1500 models for my study and bedroom to continuously keep all my rooms at a consistent and comfortable temperature.

The ads for Eden Pure are not fully truthful.this heater makes your electric bill really soar.It does not warm the room as they advertise. We are really dissapointed in ours.It now sets in a closet never to be used again.A great waste of money.

How can it make sense to pay hundreds of dollars for a space heater such as an Edenpure or CZ when there are very good ones, such as Vornados, for under $100? Yes, there are some space heaters that do not work well, and that is usually because they do not move the heated air efficiently. But to spend $300,$400 or more just doesn't make sense. You are paying for heavy advertising, wood cabinets, fancy controls and company salesmen in home repair stores who happily spout marketing hype. Any good space heater will do what they claim, without costing $$$, weighing 30+ pounds and requiring replacement tubes.

It's sad to see all these bogus CZ Infrared comments posted. They all either start or end in a similar way. Introducing themselves, then thanking the company. Not saying it doesn't happen on occasion, but not EVERY TIME. It's pretty easy to spot a real comment. I actually DO know someone with one of these heaters. She seems to like it although she still has to run her HVAC unit to circulate things. She lives in a town home so it isn't huge. Buy with caution and common sense as always and be realistic!

SCAM SCAM SCAM........DONT BUY THESE HEATERS...........ABSOLUTE GARBAGE......I have a small apartment and it didn't even warm it up good while the thing was on full power......go to home depot or wal mart and buy one.....personally I like the oil filled radiator type

I was just reading some of the comments and cant beleive how many people are saying these are good??? I'm blown away cause mine was horrible(edenpure gen 3) Maybe I got a bad one?? However the store person did let me return mine, thank god cause almost 400 bucks would of been in the trash..... Consumer reports I really hope you approve my comments (I'm a subscriber by the way)

We have a 14 x 14 sunroom that has a wood floor on a slab and is incredibly cold in the winter (close to the outside temperature). We're looking into the EdenPure1000 and the Oreck HeatWise. We tried a friend's EdenPure. It worked during the day (as did a ceramic space heater) but even when we left it on overnight, the room was cold in the morning. I haven't seen any comments about what might work well in a sunroom (it's in the back of the house; the winter sun is in the front.)

Also, any ideas of keeping the room cool in the summer? We bought a combination air conditioner/heater, but it may just be too small for the room. It will be quite a hassle to remove it and replace it. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have a three year old edenpure and am shopping for another heater. the edenpure is ok,but be careful of all the hipe, if it sounds to good to be true it usually is! Rdenpure has a terrible policy concerning repairs requiring you to ship the heater back to them. They also have large restocking fees. I believe there are better heaters on the market and I intend to learn as much as I can before buying.Just because a well known celebrity is featued on an advertisment doesn't make it good, that person is being paid a LOT for the endorsement.

I am refinishing my basement and am trying to decide weather to put in baseboard heat or purchase the Oreck Radian Heater....they say one heater can heat approx. 400 sq. feet or more...I am wondering if you could give me a consumer update on that item and also on the safety factors involved. They say they do not get hot to the touch, they look like a piece of furniture that can be used as an end table or hassock...thank you for you time, I will be waiting for your comments.
