Tip of the day: Buy the right vacuum
November 7, 2007 2:57 PM

Vacuumcleaners1954 Vacuums are popular with visitors to ConsumerReports.org and readers of Consumer Reports—indeed, "vacuum" is among the most widely searched terms on our Web site. Manufacturers, seeming to have picked up on your interest, continue to introduce new models and new types with myriad bells and whistles and claimed benefits. We'll even be testing one model designed to use ultraviolet light to kill dust mites.

(Consumer Reports has been testing vacs for decades, as illustrated by the circa-1954 photograph shown. In this image, a technician is measuring the suction ability of a vacuum.)

Given this crowded market filled with topnotch performers as well as middling models, it's essential to match the type of vacuum you choose to the kind of cleaning you typically do. Below you'll find a description of the common types and the pros and cons of each.

Once you know which style you want, read our latest reports on vacuums and wet/dry models and refer to our Ratings of upright, canister, wet/dry (available to subscribers) to choose the right model for your home. Before you shop, be sure to watch our exclusive video buying guide.

UPRIGHT
Best for
deep-cleaning carpets. Most upright vacuums are less expensive and easier to store than canister vacuums.

But you must push and pull the entire machine for most floor and carpet cleaning. When you’re vacuuming on stairs, an upright is less stable than canister models.

Price: $100 to $500 for most models

CANISTER
Best for cleaning bare floors, and stairs, drapes, and upholstery using tools. Canisters are more stable on stairs than uprights. The head fits under furniture, and you move only the head and hose.

But the entire machine tends to be heavier, bulkier, and pricier. Most aren’t as effective on carpets.

Price: $150 to $700 for most models

STICK SWEEPER
Best for light cleaning of carpets, bare floors, and edges. These suctionless sweepers are relatively quiet and have long battery run times.

But they’re not designed to deep-clean carpets, and on bare floors they might scatter debris, such as rice, kitty litter, and other common spills for which they’re designed.

Price: $20 to $80

STICK VACUUM
Best for light-duty cleaning on short-pile carpets and bare floors.

But they have trouble cleaning larger items off carpet and deliver shorter run times than sweepers, and some are no easier to push than full-size vacuums.

Price: $30 to $100

WET/DRY
Best for cleaning heavy dust, remodeling debris, liquids, and other tougher messes.

But dust emissions are high with some models. The largest can be hard to maneuver and store; the cheapest often aren’t very effective. All are noisy.

Price: $30 to $150 for most models

HAND
Best for spot cleanups on carpets and bare floors.

But you need to stoop when using one, and most handhelds lose power quickly, making them suitable only for occasional use.

Price: $20 to $60

ROBOTIC
Best for their novelty and low effort between regular vacuuming in uncluttered rooms.

But they’re expensive as a group and time-consuming to set up and run. In our test, most also tended to miss edges and corners.

Price: $200 to $1,800

CENTRAL SYSTEM
Best for canisterlike cleaning without carrying the body. They tend to be relatively quiet and can be emptied infrequently.

But central vacs are pricey and often require professional installation. The
30-foot hose can be cumbersome and takes up storage space. And there's no
place to carry tools while you work.

Price: $500 to $1,250 with tools; $300 to $750 to install

I am interested in the testing results of the new Halo vacuum. Does it do what it says it does and what are the replacement costs of the ultra-violet light? What is the noise level?

I just purchased a new Sebo 17 pound vacuum. Had I known this Halo was coming I would have waited to evaluate it. I do like the Sebo. However, with any vacuum, I still feel the rug is always dirty deep down when I am finished.

Central vacs are wonderful in that the dirt goes outside of the home, great for allergy suffers. They are pretty easy to self install we did our whole system for 900.

Looking for info on car;et shampooers! Whih one should we buy? Done any testing lately?

I have old model Kirby Upright vacuum that has attachments that allow to convert to hose to clean drapes, walls, etc. I need part that is like a lg.pin or shaft that holds metal handle to base of Kirby. Don't know what it is called? Live is small town, no dealer or repair shop, I'm disabled(neuro-disease chronic pain & can't travel, on oxygen too so need to order online. Does anyone know what this "fastener" is called so I can order it online? Please help.
Help!

I just took back the Dyson DC 21. It was the worst vacuum that I have ever used. Someone mentioned the Halo. It is over $600 and made in China. I am having a very hard time finding a good vacuum - Made in the USA. Most things I se these days are Made in China. Most vacuums also only have one year warrantees. I am told that Oreck still is made inthe USA, but they run about $700 or more for the canister that I want.

I am also looking for info on carpet shampooers...don't seem to find any??

I am looking for the best carpet shampooer, I can't seem to find a rating for one
on this web site.

Here is another request for information on rug shampooers. Will any studies be made?

I am also looking for info on carpet shampooer's.

i AM ALSO LOOKING FOR THE BEST CARPET SHAMPOOER, i AM GLAD I DIDN'T SUBSCRIBE, THEN FIND OUT, THEY HAVE NOT TESTED THEM RECENTLY.tHANKS EVERYONE!!!

Looking for ratings on carpet shampooer. I purchased the Bissell Proheat in the past, but need to replace it now. I like to see these products rated.

Just wondering if you had tested any rug shampooers. I, too, am wanting to purchase one. Thanks for any information that you can give.

I too am looking for info on a carpet shampooer. Would like to compare Bissel with Hoover.

Please post some reviews on carpet shampooers. Thanks.

Want to add my name to the list of subscribers pleading for a review of Carpet Shampooers! They are out there, one would think Consumer Reports would test? Let's keep up the pressure, they (CR) should respond to consumers' demand if anyone does, one would hope anyway.

Recently bought a Royal Carpet cleaner. It is awesome. Dealer only sells this model because of problems with others. I cleaned really bad pet stained the other day and was very impressed. Any one looking should look at the Royal brands. I am looking forward to more tough jobs around the house.

YEAH! Lets get those carpet shampooers rated. Can't afford to keep paying others to do it anymore

Am interested in ratings for a carpet shampooer. I am looking at the Hoover's Spin/Scrub, Legacy, All Terrain & can't find anything on the Royal. Please help!!!!

Add me to the long list of consumers looking for ratings on do-it-yourself carpet/rug shampooers. Also, ratings on businesses who do the shampooing for you. thanks!

I too was searching for some good CR info on carpet shampoo cleaners to no avail. Have used a Bissell model recently and was pleased, but before I BUY that model I came to you, CR. If you want us to keep coming to you for info, best get busy! Bob

I am a CR subscriber and would like to get a study of carpet shampooers done also. I'm trying to decide if I should get a small hand held cleaner or go for the large vacuum style carpet shampooers.

I recently bought a Rug Doctor shampooer from Kohl's. These usually sell for about $800.00 but I got one on sale (and 15% off by opening a charge account) for $409.00 with $100.00 in Kohl's cash to be used in the store. These are professional quality shampooers and do an excellent job. You can use other shampoo products in these machines other than Rug Doctor.

I too would LOVE some input about carpet cleaners! I have very light carpet and 4 children. Please get on this request quickly! I have heard good things about the Rug Doctor, but before I blow my budget on it, It would be nice to have a NON-Bias test done on it. Especially if a cheaper model does a compareable job. Thanks for the great work that you have done in the past. I have came to you for many of my past purchases, and have found that you are spot on. Keep up the good work, and look forward to your results on carpet cleaners!!

Where is the carpet shampooer ratings? I have spent the last 20 minutes typing in this and that .. but to no avail. Thanks for the previous comments. I have two dogs and can't afford to keep paying anyone to do this.

Thanks!

When is Consumer Reports going to do a review of carpet
shampooers. I just spent $19 to find out you have never done
a rating for carpet shampooers. Would really like to see
one done. thanks

I looking for carpet shampooers. When will testing and a report be available?
thanks,
DaveM

I just subscribed to try and find info on whether it is best to steam clean diry carpets or use hot water extraction methood. I find I subscribed for nothing because there is no info available on carpet shampooing methods. What a waste!

Add me to the list of others who want carpet shampoo machines tested! Has there been any response from CR since Nov 2007? I'd like to know if/when this will happen.

Thank you,
Sheryl

I am adding to the carpet cleaner request. While I realize that CR cannot test everything and have enjoyed my subscription, it seems like a common household item that has been around for 150 yrs is something we should be able to see rated. I would like to see all types rated in their own categories (cheaper- Bissell/Hoover, commercial-Rug Dr. and the services-Stanley Steamer) then overall. I just bought a Bissell Proheat and not pleased at all …several issues aside from cleaning. Help us already…or explain why no ratings???
Thanks

I would also like to see you rate carpet shampooers! Please do so soon!

Ditto for me on the carpet shampooers. Just about every house has carpet now and we need to know the best shampooer to buy.

We had a Bissel which went south. We would definitely be interested in your evaluation of rug shampooers as we have recently installed new carpeting and need one.

I am looking for a good commercial rug cleaner is rog Dr. the best or what.

I TOO WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOME CARPET SHAMPOO RATINGS. I JUST SAW AN INFOMERCIAL ADVERTISING THE RUG DOCTOR AND REALLY WOULD LIKE SOME INSIGHT B4 DROPPING $700 ON IT. PLLLLEEEAAAAASSSEEEE DO SOME RESEARCH AND PASS YOUR FINDINGS ON TO US - THE SUBSCRIBERS. THANK YOU.

I am in the market to purchase a carpet shampooer and need guidence.

I just subscribed to find out no carpet cleaning info...what a disappointment. Please add me to the long list of people waiting for CR to do the report. If anyone has purchased a carpet cleaner/shampoo machine can you please give any feedback??Costco has two I'm considering.

Where is that carpet shampooer rating? It seems that you have fallen down on the job by not having these rated. Glad to know that I am not the only one disappointed. Could you let us know when and if you will ever get to it?

Frustrated Shopper

Please, please report on carpet shampooers. I've waited long enough and now I have to go and buy one. Why do you rate some items over and over and not rate a usefull product like a rug shampooer? Help!! I need an answer sooooon!!! Jim.

I just subscribed so I could get info on a vacuum cleaner & purchased one you recommended. I checked on carpet shampooers & I see there is no info. Hopefully, CR will have something in the near future.

I, too, have been waiting months for you to post a carpet shampooer review. I am going to look elsewhere for advice in the future if you don't start reviewing the products that I want to use.

Please report on carpet shampooers as soon as possible.

NEED CARPET SHAMPOOER INFO PLEASE

We need to replace our carpet cleaner. Was very happy with Big Green Clean Machine-had for many years. Can't find anything comparable. When will ConsumerReports review shampooers?

We need to replace our carpet cleaner. Was very happy with Big Green Clean Machine-had for many years. Can't find anything comparable. When will ConsumerReports review shampooers?

We too are interested in ratings on carpet shampooers.
Hope something happens soon!

Thanks for all the good info on other things.

I too am just writing to say that I'm disappointed to not find any carpet shampooing ratings and surprised that people have been asking for it this long with no response. CR, please listen to your cutomers!

Please rate carpet steamers/shampooers/services. It is incredible to me that this has not been done yet. I will not renew my subscription if this has not been done by the time the subscription runs out.

Cannot believe CR has no ratings on carpet cleaners. I have looked and looked and can't seem to find any info!
I have owned several carpet cleaners and they were all very substandard. I want to buy a good one and need your help. Please perform a study on these ASAP! Thank you.

I've been looking for carpet shampooer ratings for years, and very surprised they haven't been. I'd like to buy one and rely heavily on Consumer Reports for just about everything. I hope to see them rated before I end up buying one without the support of Consumer Reports.

I too, would like to see infor on a carpet shampooer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What's Up?

Ditto to all of the above postings. When can we expect some testing results on carpet shampoo machines?

Signed up because of looking for carpet shampooer and found there are not reviews. Seems so strange? When will any come out? So many people would like them done.

Like everyone else I have waited and waited for a report on carpet shampooers. When will we get one.

Please review carpet cleaners. I bought a Bissle last year paid $250 for it and it broke after using is 3 times. I want to buy another cleaner but don't know which one is the best for the $$. Please help!!

Add my name to the list. I was ready to run to Kohl's this morning to get their on-sale Bissel but am not happy with my current older model so was wondering how recent models were rated. Now I'm not sure what to do! I'd like info on all kinds of water/steam cleaners for carpet as well as vinyl/hardwood.

In the same boat, need to get a good carpet cleaner but not sure what to buy. Last review I was able to find was from July 2003.(in Consumer Reports magazine from library) Is there updated information coming soon? Thanks

I am with all the people above that would like information on carpet shampoo and steamers. This is basic stuff of which I thought that CR would have already tested. Please test soon.

I've looked everywhere else and would have expected that there might be a snippet here about carpet\rug\upolstery cleaners or shampooers but no luck. How about just a hint folks?

I too subscribed to find out what would be the best shampooer I am
really disappointed to find out there is nothing here!!

You guys should look at Amazon.com. They have a TON of reviews of carpet cleaners. I personally like the Hoover F5914-900 SteamVac. Very reasonable price for the results.

add me to the growing list of requestees for some info on carpet cleaners. Big vs. small, professional vs. personal, steam vs...

I can't believe there is nothing about carper shampooing equip.
They got me - another waste.

I just subscribed today to get info on carpet shampooers. It seems people have been asking for a review on these for a long time. What's the process to get a review after several people have requested one? I see lots of requests for a review but no answer.

Just one more person looking to buy a carpet steamer and would appricate a review.

My wife was asking me to research steam cleaners / carpet shampooers so I joined for $ 26.00 to discover no help whatsoever. Imagine my disappointment! I guess I will just have to wing it. I guess I should have not bothered to join. Should I cancel after 10 minutes being a member?

I too am on the list of folks wanting info on carpet steamers/cleaners. Glad somebody on the forums recommended to go to Amazon.com. Will check the reviews there. I tend to trust consumer reports over other review sites, but for lack of these reviews, or a response from consumer reports on an ETA when they'll do this (or just acknowledge they're reading the months of posts requesting this), I'll go elsewhere. Big bummer I couldn't find all my review needs in one place.

I was advised by Hoover's customer service to check your reports to help pick the right Hoover carpet cleaner; so I joined this monrning only to find out, THERE ARE NO CONSUMER REPORTS on carpet cleaners!!! Please add this to your future studies.

Thanks for the tip about Amazon, I'm headed there now for carpet shampooer tips. Would also like to see research on carpet shampooing services offered by companies like Stanley Steemer, Home Depot (Chem Dry), etc. I have had varying results even from the same vendors over the years and I really wonder how clean they can get my carpet compared to using a personal device or even the type for rent at the grocery store. Across the board comparison of all types on depth of cleaning would be great.

I am very disappointed that CR has not done a study on DIY carpet cleaners/steamers. I am a long-time CR subscriber. Something as simple and basic as this makes me question the value of my subscription.

I cannot believe CR has let down in this important area. Most people cannot afford to have their carpets professionally cleaned and ratings on carpet cleaners would be invaluable to them. Step up and rate this needed product!

Do you not read these comments? At least you could say "we will not rate carpet Shampooers". With not at least a "I'm sorry" I will now discontunue my subscription to CR. No Thanks.

It looks like CR purposefully chooses not to responding to inquiries regarding carpet cleaning methods or products. Must we suspect the worst???

Please review both do-it-yourself carpet shampooing machines and the professional services that come to one's home.

So with pages of requests for a carpet cleaner review, have you gotten the message, Consumer Reports? Do you ever respond or what???

CR, please tell us WHEN or IF you will be publishing any DIY carpet shampooer reviews!!! Can you not see our collective frustration?

We use Consumer Reports on all of our major purchases and they have never steered us wrong, however we are now in need of a carpet cleaner and you seem to have ignored that category. How disappointing!

Why no ratings of carpet cleaners? I too subscribed today for this specific item -- you're failing us!!!!

I would also like information on carpet shampooers. We need to be able to find what we need on your site or there is no point in subscribing. You have MANY requests for this information.

Won't be a CR review on carpet steam cleaners until around 02/09, read it elsewhere on this site. While you're at it CR, please do a side piece on the various carpet steam cleaning detergents!

on july 5th someone posted this sugestion maybe we should be going there with our comments, i'm going to check it out.
July 5th: Suggestions for report topics can be made through this web site: http://custhelp.consumerreports.org/cgi-bin/consumerreports.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php

Why does Consumer Reports not rate carpet shampooers, and why do they ignore all these comments and requests people have? The fact something as common and practical as a carpet shampooer is not rated makes no sense. It's obvious there are lots of people who want to see them rated, and the least CR can do to is to explain why they're not or let us know when they will be. It's very frustrating!

I need a carpet shampooer recommendation.

Ditto!!!!!!

It's surprising that CR hasn't reviewed carpet cleaning companies that are nationwide, as well as the DIY types that are able to be rented at outlets like hardware or grocery stores, and the type you can buy to keep at home. It seems that everyone with carpets needs this service eventually, and many at relatively frequent intervals. The service is costly, as are the machines and the cleaning products themselves, so it seems like it would be a natural for CR. We'd really appreciate a response from you, CR. We wait expectantly.

Yeah, I need carpet shampooer recommendations!

Carpet shampooer reviews...please!!!

COSTCO is having a sale on a Bissel carpet cleaner tomorrow so I came here to check and you don't have a review of carpet cleaners and won't have one until Feb 2009???????????????

I went shopping this weekend for a carpet shampooer, then remembered I have a subscription to Consumer Reports and thought I would check to see what they recommend. By the looks of it, they don't recommend any!!!!

Please, please help all of us who are need of a good carpet shampooer.

I too am looking for rating on carpet shampooer. Please review them. Thanks

Lets get some reviews on rug shampoo machines! I have been a member of consumers union for over 20 years. PLEASE.....

I subscribed to your reporting system because I trusted your advice. Now that I've actually become a member, I'm disappointed because the products I've wanted ratings on are not tested by your company. Along with many other members, I want to know about the best carpet shampooer and about Electrolux kitchen appliances. These products are not inexpensive, so checking their ratings is very important BEFORE purchase. Please test these items or I'll will not subscribe to your organization again.

yes what is up with no report on carpet cleaners? OBVIOUSLY PEOPLE ARE NEEDING IT NOW! please respond consumer reports!

Well Consumer Reports? Do you always treat your customer base like crap?

Why don't you ANSWER EVERYONE asking for reviews of carpet shampoo machines?

I too am in the market for a carpet shampooer. Have dirty carpet now so don't think I can wait until 2/09 for a review.

PLEASE tell me what you know about carpet shampooers!!!

The best reviews on carpet cleaners are on Amazon. You can't go wrong with thousands of ratings when people use these for years. I think the normal CR review can't top that and probably the reason they haven't reviewed these.

They have missed out on the move from carpet to hard flooring that most of us have. Those cleaners are also reviewed on Amazon, as well, but I don't trust them. Mostly because consumers haven't purchased enough different models to give a good a/b comparison.

I've gotta chime in on this topic like others have. I've been pretty happy with my Consumer Reports online subscription. I fully expected to find reviews of carpet cleaners at CR and was disappointed to find absolutely nothing.

Keep up the good work and please add carpet cleaners as soon as you can. I look forward to reading the review!

Bought the best vacuum cleaner in the world for pet hair thanks to your ratings (the Kenmore model) and am now looking for a carpet shampooer, either upright or spot. When will you test????

Obviously there are many customers that are interested in carpet shampooer ratings and it is unbelievable that such a common product is not rated by CR and no comments from them. I too was looking for a rating and will cancel my subscription as well. I had looked for ratings on dishwashers awhile back and based on CR rating purchased a Fridgedaire, but before delivery I checked the actual customer reviews and there were horrible so I cancelled by order and bought a Kitchenaid and so far I am happy. But because of CR's rating they wasted my time and delayed my purchase. I am not a happy customer! Going to cancel this worthless subscription now.

I have to rent a a shampooer either from Von's, Uhaul or safeway.

Anyone have any suggestions about renting? I have heard to use Folex as the shampoo but no firm suggestions on brand.

Help!!

Another request for info on carpet steam cleaners...come on people!!!!

Need carpet shampoo machine reviews - or at least a comment back from CR reps - no response to your customers???

i just subscribed to CR online and my first and foremost search is for a carpet steam cleaner. To say the least I'm disappointed.

I need to buy a carpet shampooer and need some info on them would be very helpful. Thanks

I needed to replace my carpet steamer today- I am very disappointed that CU has no review! I too have been subscriber for many years. I would have thought that this product would be a frequently updated item- so many people obviously need to clean the carpets in their home! From above comments it seems this item is a frequently searched for review. How many others were disappointed to find no review and didn't take the time to leave a comment?

Ditto! I had a Bissell ProHeat and it went out after 2 years, then I've had a Dirt Devil for 2 years and I think the water pump went out on that one. I don't want to keep buying a new cleaner every 2 years! Thanks

Apparently it may have been reviewed awhile ago, and reviews may be cyclical. I found a link that shows "Carpet cleaners/deep cleaning" was reviewed in July 97. Not sure if it refers to carpet spray cleaners or hardware. Either way, it's been almost 10 years.

Well I agree with the 100's of other consumers that are more than
disappointed, passed mad & totally disgusted with "CR" and staff for their failure to respond or show any kind of effort to all
the requests for information on carpet steam cleaners and/or
shampooers.....But your still taking everybodys money....as if
things aren't hard enough on the consumers....
Thanks for "NOTHING" over & over & overrrrrr....

I have just submitted sever searches for “carpet cleaner” “steam cleaner” “carpet shampoo”, and “carpet steam cleaner” and was not able to find what I am looking for. I am VERY disappointed in the Consumer Reports web site.

We just found a Rug Dr.for sale at Costco and had been planning on renting one! We were happy to find one for sale but we research Consumer Reports for every major purchase, and feel safer with purchasing things doing so! We came home to get on
the computer to check Consumer Reports to research rug shampooers and were dissapointed to see theres no information!
This is something I would also like to see added to all of the
things you research! Thanks!

I have been using a borrowed Bissell Proheat Clearview model 8905 carpet cleaner. It actually does a respectable job. I feel it is comparable to having it done professionally, although much slower. I can't comment on this units longevity however, as the owner of it has had problems that required professional help to solve. I too came here today to check out the ratings of these products and was disappointed to find no mention of them anywhere.

I was dissappointed to find that CR hasn't evaluated any carpet/steam cleaners, that was the whole reason I bought my subscription to CR. Guess I'll just cancel my subscrition when it's up since it hasn't been useful to me.

Count me in on the carpet cleaning conundrum. Would love to have the various carpet cleaning services reviewed in addition to do-it-yourself equipment that consumers can purchase. For those of us with hardwood and tile floors that need constant cleaning - I'd also suggest CR include a report on steam cleaners for hard surface flooring.

I am returning a Bissell Proheat X2. I have used it three times and the brushes have stopped turning. I would exchange for another but my neighbor has the same shampooer and her brushes don't work either. I'm looking for info. on other brands.

I just signed up and my first search was to see if you had any ratings on steam carpet/wood floor cleaners. Guess not. Very disappointed, as I just bought one and wanted to make sure that I bought the right one. Please let us know when this might be reviewed. If it's soon, I won't open the box.

I just spent 30 frustrating minutes on your site trying to find a review for a carpet shampoo machine. I entered every name I could think of trying to find where the review would be listed. It is a popular appliance and I was sure there must be a review somewhere. Very frustrating. All I finally found was a long list of customers that have been asking for months for a review on carpet shampoo machines.

At a minimum, please post in the vacuum section that you do not have a review on carpet shampoo cleaners. This is something you can do to immediately to respond to your customers frustration of searching for a review on popular appliance that isn't there.

Or let us know how many requests are required in order to get a response. We can start a petition so you can "git er'done".

Just one more subscriber asking for information on carpet shampooers. If you will not do the research you should at least post an explaination for this failure.

It appears I'm not the only one frustrated with CR. I just renewed my subscription only to find that the information I need on a common household appliance doesn't exist. What makes this so disturbing is, that after getting requests for this information for at least a year, CR does have the courtesy to respond. Can you imagine how many people are upset that haven't posted a comment?

I also want information on carpet shampooing equipment and the shampoo. What works best?

Rats. See the dozens of posts above. Ditto. I just joined online to get a review. Why not expedite it? I think I scanned a comment that it won't be completed until Feb 09. I did visit Amazon first, but thought CR would be more thorough and reliable. Disappointed with the void.

Looking at the past comments, CR should be on top of this one !
It's nice to get rating updates on vaccum cleaners, but enough of that...get on the carpet cleaners/shampooers!

Absolutely riduculous that CR hasn't done a review on carpet shampooers!! Get on it CR!!

I just bought a Bissel PRO heat Turbo at WalMart and after just one use, the front end of the machine has dropped and so now the machine cannot be pushed forward. Also cheaply made. Not impressed. CR needs to run a test of home carpet steamers/cleaners.

I too can't believe there are NO ratings for carpet shampooers. Come on CR, what are you waiting for???

I have always checked Consumer Reports before buying things on our limited budget. I had wanted to get carpet shampooer/steamers for Christmas presents, but ALAS, there is nothing to study! Any chance that you can give us ANY information before December?

Carpet Shampooorers , Carpet Cleaners , Rug Cleaners , Rug Shampooer , WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL THEM !!!!! WHAT THE HAY ..DO YOUR JOB -- THE REASON WE ALL SUBSCRIBE IS TO AVOID BAD PURCHASES OF EXPENSIVE EQUIPTMENT --- IF YOU HAVE CARPET, AND QUEST WHAT? - I DO , THEN THIS IS AT LEAST A TWICE A YEAR PROJECT ..... I just trashed the Bissill Carpet Steam Cleaner...It says in bold lettering "OUT CLEANS ALL OTHER CLEANERS" ...This may be true but what they fail to mention is it only lasted two years ..... We had it repaired - worked once and then I removed the cover (yes I am mechaniclly inclinded 33 year Master Tech - built and own my own shop for 23 years)to fine a small cheep pump and very poor water and vacuum hoses... So hear I am checking-as I always do-with Consumer Reports for their expert report of the best C a r p e t C l e a n e r !

Also interested in carpet shampooer. The aspect of the cleanliness of other users of the rental variety concerns me. The convenience and assurance that you're not getting residue from others germs and messes makes me want to BUY.

I CANNOT believe there aren't reviews on carpet shampooers!!! I payed $19 extra to subscribe to CR Online so that I could find info on the best carpet shampooers & there is NOTHING! AGH!!! Ok, I'm frustrated... but seriously, would you PLEASE add this product to your list of reviews??? Obviously, people want to know what CR has to say about this product!

WELL WELL WELL I ALSO JUST BOUGHT A SUBSCRIPTION LOOKING FOR INFO ON CARPET CLEANERS AND I MUST BUY ONE THIS WEEK

Backpack vacuum cleaners - Anyone have one? Like it? I'm SICK of dragging my canister vac all over the house to vacuum my hardwood and tile floors. CR - in addition to the carpet shampooers, can you test and review the backpack vacuums?

Carpet Shampooers, when can we see ratings on these products, I for one am tired of spending good money only to find they are junk. Last one or two years and fail to live up to their caims. I would like to try the Rug DR. but would like to see what you have to say before shelling out another 400 t0 700 dollars.

Please review carpet cleaners.

Hello CR
Just want to add my voice to the humungous group you have here to say "Please, please do a review of carpet shampooers/steamers and the liquid products they use."
I am tired of trying to finish a cleaning job on the supermarket rental's schedule.

Hurry
Janice

I also just wrote in looking for carpet shampooers. I'm a long time CR subscriber. Hope this is coming up soon. Too late for me though.

I sent a contact form... do you think there is anyone at CR that actually monitors the comments? So much for customer service!

Please, please, please do a carpet cleaning machine review!!!

Ditto on the carpet Shampooer comments. I'll have to hire a service until CR gets on the ball. Very disappointing. :(

We have been waiting so long for CR to review carpet cleaners that we may have to purchase new carpeting as they are so soiled. We never make purchases like appliances without first researching the product with CR. Please review ASAP!!!!!!!

If CR won't rate carpet shampooers, lets do it ourselves. What are your experiences with the Hoover Steamvac vs the Bissell Pro Steam as an example. I rented a commercial model from Home Depot, and it did as good a job as a carpet cleaning service except that you have to do the work. Having said, you need to pre-treat stains and give them a scrub for the best results.

Menards just started renting Rug Doctors here and I just cleaned all the carpets in my house. It was a brand new machine and did a fine job of getting out some tough stains along with the help of Rug Doctors "High Traffic" spray and in some cases two passes with the machine. In some of the really bad areas, we let the carpet dry and then did another pass or two with excellent results. Used wide version machine which holds about 3 1/2 gallons of liquid, and also rented the upholstery attachment for stairs couches and couch pillows. Total cost was less than 60 bucks.

I just subscribed and am very disappointed that carpet cleaners/steam vacs have not been rated.

I've been using the Bissel Pro Heat since 2004 or so. It's done a remarkable job picking up dirt. We clean 800 sq ft or so of carpet 2 -3x/year) and each time, I've been thankful to have it. It's amazing how much crud it reomves that would otherwise be clinging to the carpet. The Pro Heat takes up bucketloads of black water and leaves the house smelling fresh and clean. Well worth the $240 or so spent to buy it years ago.

Now for the downside. It has broken twice. Once, under warranty (but still, it took months for my local slow-poke Ma n Pa appliance repair shop to get around to fixing it), and now again. First time, it peed all over the rug, now it won't suck up the water/cleaner it puts out. Suffice it to say, I'm done with this model. Like you all, I came here looking for suggestions for a model to buy and have looked first CR for sound advice -- it's a family tradition! When I was little, my parents refered to it to help make decisions too. Anyway, I was floored (pun intended) to find only community input about steam cleaners here. So, here's my 2 cents worth.

Bissell has probably improved this model since I bought it, but I would only buy it again with the idea of using it 15 or so times before ditching it -- which still makes it WAY cheaper than renting. Would simply say not to expect it to last as long as your fridge or your Mom's Kirby. Enjoy the clean while it lasts!

Why havn't you rated carpet steamers?

I bought a Bissell QuickSteamer for $70 bucks. Its nice for general cleaning. But It is horrible for cleaning pet stains. The stains keep coming back so I guess its not getting everything up.... Yuk.

I think the Bissel 2x(R) is a leader in the home market. I'm not waiting on a review. Have to take the plunge. My new house will have white carpet! With 3 dogs and 4 kids, I'm in for it!

I have loved having a subscription to CR but was disappointed when I couldn't find a review for carpet shampooers. Would be great if they would add that to the list. I don't want to spend hundreds of $$$ for a piece of junk. Hurry up with the reviews please!!

Hello! What is the deal with not rating Carpet Cleaners? I will come back when you start rating carpet cleaners.

CR USED to have carpet cleaner ratings - I remember looking at it when I bought mine. I recall they gave the Hoover high marks but that particular model has probably been discontinued years ago.

I bought a Bissell Pro Heat and I would not buy another one. Every one of the attachments broke within months - and I only have a one bedroom condo so it's not like I was using it very much. Instead of mixing the detergent in water, the detergent goes in this little container and is squirted into the water spray -- I don't consider this to be the ideal. The detergent hasn't been spraying out for over a year - all I get is a hot water spray - not sure what is wrong and my warranty is expired (I even bought the additional 3 year warranty from Best Buy - the thing really knew when to die). I would also prefer having separate dirty and clean water tanks - even if it makes it heavier to push because I don't like the way the thing is constructed to hold both in one container. Emptying the dirty water with that connecting lid flapping around is a pain. It also has a really whimpy beater brush -- my vacuum cleaner has one with more bristles. It takes up a ton of space too. My next purchase will probably be a Hoover.

I'm another dissappointed Consumer Reports subscriber. I too was in the market for a new carpet shampooer, and low and behold - nothing has been rated for this item. Too Bad. Decided not to renew my membership.

I'm glad I'm not the only one looking for information on carpet cleaning products (woolite rug cleaner, etc.). The first place I look is Consumer Reports and I was very surprised that I couldn't find any information on these products. I steam clean the area rugs twice a year, but occasionally, like any other household, accidents do occur and need to be cleaned. I hope you investigate the carpet cleaning products soon. It looks like many of us could really use your expertise advice instead of wasting money on products that don't work.

I can not believe you do not have anything on Carpet or area rug shampooers. I in desperate need of one. I am really glad I did not prescribe to this and then found out there in nothing to look at. Thanks consumers.

CG, Please do some testing for us. We the people are looking at easier ways to take care of things on our own. With economy the way it is I am trying to do as much as I can myself as to have to pay someone to come in and do it. I am sure I am speaking for a few people on this.
Thank you in advance for testing some carpet/rug shampooers and getting us some data soon.

Add yet another to the list requesting this review. I was disappointed to find that CR has not followed up on this.

I am also looking for test info on carpet shampooers/ steam cleaners.

I have allergies and like to keep carpets as clean of dust, dust mites, spills, mold, etc. as I can.

I'll agree with the need for something needing done for carpet cleaners - even if it's a blurb to the effect "Save your money and rent a Rug Sucker Deluxe from a local shop when you need a good cleaning." IIRC, that's the last I'd seen on them here - years ago.

That's not what we used our Hoover for tho'. Mostly it was for spill pick ups, hair balls, and other 'spot cleaning' that you'd never bother to go rent a heavy machine for. So yeah, you'd like it to do the job of the heavier machines or truck mounted cleaning services, but IMO if it just sucks up the coffee or does a credible job sucking up minor stains it's worth having one around just for between the major cleanings. If it'll handle the traffic areas decently, that's a plus.

We also used it to clean out the car (kids!). Got tired of taking it to someone to over soak the carpet so badly it took days to dry in an Arizona summer. Sometimes the services that do houses will do your car since they're already there, and that worked much better than the 'car wash' bozoes.

Good grief! Do a review on steam cleaners already! We have looked to CR before buying washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, vehicles, cameras, dehumidifiers, we even have a CR book devoted to Baby Items!! I can't believe that there are no reports on steamers!!

CARPET CLEANERS!!!!!

I have found that many things I look for are not covered at CR. They also do not seem to ever read these pages. So why is this blog capability even here?

Please review carpet shampooers. Thanks.

So where is the rating for a carpet shampooer? Looks like you have plenty of requests! I too looked for one.

Hoover Steam Vac works good for us. Have three very active dogs and many guest dogs. Has done a good job. There are a couple latches on the wastewater tank that are delicate. Would not hesitate to buy another of the same model.

I also want a review. I'm trying to choose between a spot cleaner and a room cleaner. I need it for pet stains.

Concerning the absence of CR reviews on carpet shampooers:

1) Ditto to all of the above!

2) CR, raise your subscription rates so that you can employ the necessary amount of people to construct and conduct the missing reviews (of shampooers and many other products).

3) Everyone, please join me in writing and posting a review of your chosen carpet cleaning tool or product (I am going to purchase a Bissell SpotBot). We will then be able to offset the increase in CR subscription prices with the increase in our salaries that will be provided by CR.

Add me to the list of people wanting to see carpet cleaners reviewed...

Add one more name to the list for rug shampooer test. We have Hoover model that seemed to do well for the last seven or eight years, but is just starting to fall apart.

Another dissatisfied customer waiting for a carpet cleaner review! I saw several requests asking for anything, something that you are working on or just that you do not currently have a review for these items and yet still no response?

Hey, lets get going with carpet shampooers. This is not brain surgery. Are you waiting for someone else to do this?

Not sure why the reviews of these steam vacuums/shampooers are no longer online. They were still here in 2007 when I made a purchase of a Hoover SteamVac. I assume that they felt the reviews were out of date (probably based on a 2003 report according to someone else post). Hopefully they are working on a new report some time soon.

I too am looking for a good carpet cleaner - maybe even ratings on a vacuum/carpet shampooer together!

Does CR read this? Where would we see their comments about this?

I would also really like to see ratings for steam vacs/shampooers please!

I brag to everyone about how I consult consumer reports before buying just about anything. My dog recently had diaherrea over serveral days when I was out of town and my Hoover carpet cleaner died (by the way it is my 2nd one in about 5 years). Imagine my disappointment when I am forced to buy one immedietly and I don't have my trusty advisor (consumer reports) to lead me to the best choice! I went with the Bissel 2X, but after reading the comments I'm not sure it will be any better than the Hoover. Rug Doctor was so expensive I couldn't see spending the cash without any consumer info. Maybe I'll take the Bissel back and get the Hoover again. Atleast I know it worked well, just didn't last.

There are a lot of people imploring CU to do a report, but not even one response. CU will lose value and seem like a poorer investment structure if it doesn't listen to its subscribers. They can be so tuned-out to this clear request.

Hey, Consumer Reports! How about a response to the many, many requests for carpet shampooer reviews!

Hurricanes and floods throughout the the country and I need a review of carpet shampooers now. My basement carpet is a dirty mess.

I would think that by now CR would have a clue... Shampooers please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well CR all me to the list of unsatisfied customers looking for carpet shampoo reviews with no luck.

HELLO.......Can someone from Consumer Reports at least respond to any of this. I too logged on to see the reviews of carpet cleaners..

Please give us a review on carpet shampoo equipment.

What can I say that hasn't been said over and over and over...if anyone has any info on carpet shampoo for dog urine please post a comment. I was hoping to find info on these type of products but as all of you I am very let down by CR. This was my first subscription and my last.

I guess I can only add my name to a long list of people waiting for a report on carpet steam cleaners. But from the length of this list, I guess I better not hold my breath waiting on an answer.

You have been receiving a multitude of requests for carpet shampooer ratings. Are you going to respond or are you going out of business? My renewal depends on it.

I vote for a carpet cleaner review - along with many others I see! We recently installed a brand new carpet (using your buying advice), purchased a brand new vacuum to keep said carpet looking its best (using your buying advice) and now have our first spills needing more than a towel to clean...but alas, no reviews to help. Sad day.

I'm so disappointed your shampooer review won't be ready until 2009. In desperation, this week I had to purchase a Hoover from HSN (hope it works as shown). I will never again use a carpet cleaning company because the last time my carpets were soaking wet for 3 days with every fan blowing and no satisfaction from the well-known company.

FOR EVERYONES INFO
Just read this from editor of CR's Home And Garden Blog.

NOTE: We've read your comments about the desire to see a report on carpet cleaners/shampooers. Consumer Reports is planning a testing-based project of carpet cleaners, including steam models. We expect to publish a report in a 2009 issue.—Editor, June 2, 2008

I received an email from CU asking me to rejoin. Since I need a new carpet shampooer, I decided to rejoin. What a surprise when I found no reviews and no response from CU, even though the blog goes back to at least May. What's the story CU?

Please put some kind of info on carpet cleaners. Pretty please

from red dirt hawaii

REALLY want info on carpet shampooers - looks like a lot of us do. Just thought I'd add to the list. Costco is selling RugDoctors for $500 - seems good for a brand name that is well known and does the job. Just want to know the BEST.

I joined for for short time just to get info on carpet steamers and no info what gives???

Just returned a Bissell area rug cleaner; worked fine on one rug and then had no suction. Came home to seek advice from you guys only to find nothing. Sure would like some help here.

I need info on carpet shampooers, can't believe C.R. has not done this yet.

I had a bissell spotbot, which I used over and over again. I thought it was a great machine for the money, we did our furniture, drapes (which were a little hard, definately a two woman job)our cars, everything and I had the best of luck with it. I did have to replace the hand vac nozzle which I ordered from Bissell.com, then also found them on Amazon.com, and then after two years the unit gave out, but I feel like the work it put out was worth the money and I will be purchasing it again! Now it does work in a circle, and in a pinch, I have used for a large area, just overlapping my circles and not a large area like a whole room, I definately recommend the booster they sell, keeps down on suds, and I did pretreat any heavy spots, actually used shout to pretreat. Hope this helps anyone.

I am looking for info on a good carpet shampooer. We have a handheld that works OK - but only for very small areas. On the rare occasion when a pet is sick, I really need something upright (don't want to be on my knees with a handheld in the middle of all that...eeewwww) I like the kind you can rent from the Home Depot but those cost a fortune. I want something for occasional home use. Doesn't anyone from CR monitor this site and can tell us when a review of shampooers is scheduled next?

I read a CU report on rug shampooers about 2 years ago. They really discouraged the use of home shampooers as not being as effective but without giving reviews or ratings on them, mentioned the Hoover as the best of the home shampooers. I have white carpets and don't want to pay professionals every couple of months so we bought the Hoover. I'm happy to report that it cleans even more effectively than the professional we had used.

I agree about Consumer Reports not having carpet shampooer reviews. The best place, and one which is starting to rival Consumer Reports, is Amazon reviews.

Although they are not professionally tested or have unbiased reviews, the sheer number of respondents give you a clear pick of what is good and what is junk.

Only once has CR steered me wrong, and that was many years ago with an answering machine that started to have failures after a number of months of use. Afterwards, CR came back with the follow-up of the numerous failures after a few months use.

I'm starting to have confidence in Amazon almost as well as CR, especially if the ratings are from a large pool of owners.

I think CR would do themselves a favor by accepting ratings from consumers on products they are unable to review in a timely manner.

After I signed up for CR on the internet the first thing I wanted to review was carpet steam cleaners. NO REPORT! I need a new one and no help. I will tell thouse who are thinking about the "Oreck", don't waste your money. You have to use there shampoo refills that cost a lot and it is low on suction and always leaking because of poor gaskets. It also has a very small pickup tank. I have owned three modles and "Oreck" is the worst. The best I had was a bissel. Just be careful because the plastic pices break easy. Now it's time for CR to stand up and give us there report.

Steam cleaners please... rug cleaners, spot cleaners, and steam mops would be awesome!

Your subscribers have been asking for carpet shampoo testing and results for 5 months without so much as even one single brief acknowledgement from you. For many years you have had a sterling reputation with a VERY large segment of the population consistently looking to you for guidance prior to making purchases. Just because you HAVE BEEN a major force in the lives of Americans doesn't mean that you will forever hold that distinction. Maybe it's time for you to step aside so that a group who understands the importance of customer satisfaction can take the lead.I am terribly disappointed and will now go to Amazon.com to get information on carpet shampoo machines.

In the absence of any CR reviews, I purchased a Hoover SteamVac, and it was pure crap. I took it in for warranty service after nearly every use because the carpet cleaning solution dispenser clogged up quickly. It also had a spongy 'gasket' at one of the assembly flanges to mitigate a design flaw that caused leakage. I finally threw it out. I'll purchase a Bissel Pro Heat and report back on that one.

What on earth is the problem? Don't you read what your subscribers want? They want you to review Carpet Shampooers! Where is your customer service, CR? For heavens sake, TAKE ACTION and GET IT DONE!

Obviously I'm not the only one in need of ratings on carpet shampooers, both full size and portable. Please acknowledge subscriber interests.

I was surprised to see that CR didn't have a carpet shampoo review/rating. Just trying to figure out which brand I should buy.

I really feel ripped off subscribed with one specific interest to motivate me info on Carpet Shampooers but apparently Consumer Reports is more interested in getting subscribers then answering their requests for information. People have been asking for almost 8 months and still nothing

I would like to see a report on carpet shampooers. If you have published a report on them, how do I locate it? If you are planning a report, when will it be available? If you have no plans to publish a report, why not? As responses show, lots of us would benefit from it.

ike others I was disappointed to not find a review here on carpet cleaner/shampoo machines.

I just bought the Bissell 2X and I'll post my thoughts on it in a week after I've had the chance to clean all the carpets with it. ;)

HELLO-
DO YOU PLAN TO TEST CARPET SHAMPOOERS??
IT SEEMS THAT WOULD BE QUITE HELPFUL FOR QUITE A FEW PEOPLE....

I'm trying to figure out what steam vacuum to buy. I can see by the above comments the CONSUMERS have been begging for a report on these, with no obvious response. Hello! we are the consumers and this is what we want. Please let us know which are the best. Thank you.

Please review carpet steamers as well as shampooers. Our carpet installer told us not to use anything that had spinning brushes on it. Steam only. Thanks!

I too would like information on a carpet steamer and shampooer. Thanks.

I also came here looking for info on carpet shampooers. Thanks to a previous post for the tip re amazon.com.

I am pleased that you plan to publish a report on home carpet cleaning machines in 2009. I am also interested in learning whether professional services leave any residue, bacteria, allergens, etc. from previous jobs in customers' homes. I have allergies, no pets, etc. and certainly do not want to introduce any irratants into my home when I work so hard to keep it free of them. I am also interested in learning of problems with any cleaning agents used in the cleaning systems.

Additionally, I also have an older Armstrong no-wax vinyl floor with a white background. Although I use the company's recommended cleaner when I mop, the floor is beginning to look dingy. I am interested in learning what Consumer Reports recommends.

I have been looking for a steam carpet cleaner. Of course I looked in consumer reports. To my amazement, I found out you don't have information on them. Please help out you very long list of
subscribers interested in this appliance.

Thank you

This is a difficult site - I've already spent 10 minutes behind a secure site that I subscribe to and have not been able to find any ratings for "carpet steam cleaning". It's amazing that I have found several other posts with the same complaint. Too much of a hassle - Consumer Reports really needs to get on board with the technology advances. I won't be renewing the subscription.

Go to overstock.com the have reveiws on the carpet steamers.the've bought.!!

Hi. I'm looking for a lightweight and easy to use vacuum for my hardwood floors. I know they make some models that vacuum/sweep and also mop. I want to buy one and don't even care how much it costs as long as it will save me time and does a good job. I'm looking for advice on what to buy.

Thanks,
Linda

why nothing on carpet shampooers and floor buffers?

Please, please review steam carpet cleaners. I'm delaying a purchase and spending too much $ on renting machines. Communicate with subscribers regarding when we can expect one!

Please give me information on carpet shampoo machines.
Have you tested any?

It's been a long time since Consumer Reports reviewed carpet shampooers. Technology has changed since then and Christmas is coming. It would be real nice for all your customers to know what to buy. Please tackle this job and lets get some ratings.

I would like information on carpet steam cleaners. I'm not sure if this is the same as a carpet shampooers but I don't want to put soap on my rug and the stem kills mites as well. Isn't anyone thinking about this like I am? Please, all of you go back and modify your comments to include carpet steam cleaners because I know that's what you meant since most of you said you can't afford to pay someone to do this all the time. That's what they do...steam it! 'Cmon Consumers...get on the schtick!~

I too am dismayed not to see CR reviewing carpet shampoo cleaners! They are "out there" and we need a credible alternative to Stanley Steemer!

Just would like to add my voice to the clamor of requests for a review of carpet shampooers.

Please rate the carpet shampooers. I have had two Bissell carpet shampooers. They work great but the problem is they only work one time. The next time I get them out to use them, they don't work. I still save over having to hire a company to come in but i would like to know if there are any out there that you can use over and over.

I just got off the phone with C.R.They said there was no plan to review shampooers in the next three months. I guess that's as far ahead as they go. They missed the boat on reviewing them BEFORE seasonal houseguests and AFTER thecompany leaves didn't they?

Would have liked to have had some reports on carpet cleaners. This is one of the reasons I am not renewing my subscription

I am surprised at the lack of testing by CR on carpet shampooers. Please add my name to the list of those requesting a test on them.

When will ConsumerReports do rug shampooers

I too am disappointed at the absence of reports dealing with RUG SHAMPOOERS.

I JUST SPENT $26.00 TO FIND OUT THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON HOME CARPET SHAMPOOERS. THANKS A LOT!

CR has been slow to respond to requests for carpet shampooer reviews; I'm adding my name to the list. My 5-year old Bissell worked very well until a cheap plastic part (the throttle) in the handle stopped responding - thus halting the dispensing of solution. Great, solid machine except for apparently a spring located in the sealed unit - argh!!! Need info on new ones, please.

I too came to this website to look for information on carpet shampooers. When will they be available? One would think after all these comments something would have been done.

Helloooo McFly anybody in there?....Where's the carpet shampooer ratings????Nobody could possibly have any use for that info..oh well..I guess I'll look for the ratings on best Plastic Knife & Fork set.Yipee

hey Geri thanks for your review. Maybe we could all post our reviews & save CR the trouble.

It's been two years that I've been waiting for Consumers Reports to rate carpet shampooers and nothing to date. I'm going to let me subscription lapse.

Like other subscribers whose comments have appeared for some time here, I, too, need a carpet shampooer and am surprised to find that CR has not rated them. Please consider this topic soon.

Please review carpet shampooers. The economy is tanking and carpet cleaning/shampooing is an expensive service. I would really like to know if it's more economical to buy an appliance and do it myself.

You owe subscribers an answer when you plan to conduct a test of carpet shampooers. Can't believe CR has not yet responded to all the requests for one.

I also would like to see a review of carpet shampoo machines from Consumer Reports. I just threw away a $300 Bissell ProHeat 2X Cleanshot after only a few uses because the cheap plastic housing cracked and it became worthless (and I found several other reviews noting the same experience). Also, the attachments were next to useless, and it performed poorly in corners. All this after reading tons of "five star" ratings and doing extensive research before buying the thing. The reviews on the internet for these machines are all over the place and unreliable.

I hope Consumers Union reads these comments.

i subscribed to consumer report, to find reports on stand mixers
and carpet shampoo machines. good report on stand mixers no report on shampoo machines. waste of money.
disappointed in ohio

Are you too busy to test carpet cleanig equipment for your clients? It is difficult to find reliable nformation on this equipment.

I have reviewed consumer report magazines for past year and found no info regarding carpet shampooers. I just took out subscription to online CR hoping to find some review info and suggestions for purchase and found none. Do you not review carpet shampooers? I see other letters with my same concern.

I did a google search on carper shampooer reviews... Consumer reports was the first hit.

So I pay my money, and find comments from people asking for carpet shampooer reviews, but no actual reviews.

If I were reviewing consumer reports right now, I would have to say that I have been scammed.

How can you have never over the years reviewed carpet shampooers? Why purchase a keyword hit on google for a phrase you don't have support for? Are you /trying/ to rip consumers off? What part of "carpet shampooer reviews" rates you at the top google paid hit? Do your google adword buyers not know it is wrong to pay for words you don't service?

Please, please review carpet shampooers...I have 4 Persian cats that yack!

I can see I'm not the only one that NEEDS to know which carpet cleaner to buy. Do I get one that's most advertised, a Royal Carpet Cleaner, a Bissell, a Rug Doctor, Hoover, Legacy, or Acme?

Please advise when you will be rating carpet shampooers.

Consumers reviews some products to death; digital cameras, cars, vacuums, TV's, computers, to name only a few. This approach is too limited to be helpful to consumers overall. Carpet shampooers are a good example of many other products that are neglected. I would rather pay more per subscription for better product coverage than continue with these very limited product reviews and testing.

I subscribed to you service thinking that you would rate the best "Carpet Shampooers",but there are no ratings on these units. If you do not rate these units this will be my last month.

CARPET SHAMPOOER!!!! Anyone at CR......Anyone? Helllooooooooo

Add my name to the carpet shampooer list! Come on CR!

Looking for ratings on carpet shampooers. Please add their testing to your listings. I can see I'm not alone in this request. Thank you.

Wake Up customer service and listen to the people!!!!!!!!!!!!! We need rating on carpet shampooers, what the heck are you waiting for! I have depended on Consumer reports before making any major purchase, but you are letting your public down. Come on get with it and do your job please!!!!!!!!!!

Just subscribed to CR to find information on carpet cleaners. There is nothing. Very disappointed about that. Hope to see something in the near future.

Man, I'm disappointed there are no reviews. How would we know if/when they do rate them? I guess I'll keep checking back.

Would like to see ratings on carpert shampooers..

There are a number of retail sites online that allow recommendations from their visitors. Amazon is one where the traffic is high enough to give a pretty good idea if a particular model works well or not. It offers plenty of room for reviewers to go on and on about their purchases. I too feel better of CR likes things, but feel well supported if Amazon reviewers like them too.

I have the feeling CR is getting right on the carpet shampooer request. Do remember it takes time - from planning, to purchasing, to analyzing data, to publishing. Give them at least a year from now, maybe less if it's in the works.

Excuse me, but what percentage of American's have pets?? Why is there no info on carpet steam cleaners? The main reason I subscribed. What's up with that?

How about a test of carpert cleaning services and methods offered and used by companies or independents that are available to the average consumer. I can't believe CR has not done such testing--I've been checking in on a regular basis for several years and still no testing on this issue -somebody at CR wake up.

I am also totally surprised that there is no info on rug cleaners. I bought subscription when looking for a range and was very pleased by what I found. How can you not have information on something as common as a rug/steam cleaner? Any news now will be too late for my much needed purchase.

I have been a long time member of CR and it seems that the more I search the less you have of what I need.

I too would really like some data on carpet cleaners/shampooers/ steamers/etc.

Thank You.

So, it is almost a year past the previous posts, and CR still does not have a rating for a carpet cleaner/steamer/shampooer. Ridiculous.

IS ANYONE AT CR ACTUALLY READING THESE POSTS?

Add me to the long list of folks that wanted information on a carpet shampooer...

When are you going to put rug shampooers on the list of quality cleaners. A lot of money is charged for these, and we should be able to see which has been tested, and approved.

I too would like to see a report on carpet cleaning machines, plus the pros & cons of do-it-yourself carpet cleaning. Other replies indicated there would be a report in 2009, but when in 2009? I don't see that info anywhere. I also noticed that others complained that this site isn't "User Friendly" - I thought I was the only one that had problems navigating here.... If there isn't a current report on something, but is in the works, please state that at the top of the search results before any blogs or related articles - please!

I have some information on Carpet Cleaners that might help everyone who is looking for one. I'm not sure about the rug doctor sold by Costco, but I can tell you that the rug doctor we rented was very disappointing. Hard to use and did a terrible job as far as I am concerned. We owned a Hoover which was a pretty decent run cleaner. We had been happy with it, but then we got 2, yes 2 puppies and our hoover broke. We had it repairs and then ran into a specialist at a small private vacuum center who told us that as far as he was concerned the best on the market was the dirt devil. He gave us an excellent price. I think they are normally between 299 and 399. We brought it home, put it to work and MY GOD it really does the job. It cleaned up what the rug doctor wouldn't and it has suction like you can't believe. It cleaned the pee spots very well and is easy to use except for one minor thing that is worth putty up with. It is extremely heavy to push and pull because of the suction. It can be hard on the back. But if you can put up with this minor inconvenience I highly recommend the dirt devil. We've had several carpet cleaners over the years and never one that cleans like this one does. Hope that helps.

Anyone looking for informaiton on Carpet or Rugs can go to carpet-rug.org
They have tons of information regarding carpet and rugs. Covers everything from production to cleaning! I am an flooring inspector and use their site to research issues with carpet and rugs. They set industry standards, they are the "go-to" people!
If you have additional questions, you can email me at barbreeinspections@ yahoo.com or check out our web site at FCITS.org

Common everyone. Do you realize how many things are out there to test? Consumers does a pretty good job overall and I've relied on them for most purchases I've made. I'm sure that those of you who paid $19.00 but didn't have your quest listed would be disappointed but there are a lot of other things you can to refer to over time.I subscribe to their magazine as well as the net. I wouldn't mind knowing about a Central Vac study. I don't see it in the Vacuum catagory. When you get a chance.....

I just subscribed as I need info about a carpet cleaner. Well what a surprise, I see pages and pages of similar requests dating back for months. Glad I only subscribed monthly. I definitely will not resubscribe if Consumer Credit does not respond. I had decided to wait to see your opinion before purchasing one today and could not find anything at the local Barnes and Noble in Consumer Reports referencing ratings on carpet cleaners. Now I know why, there aren't any.

I also agree with the need for carpet shampooer/deep cleaner reviews. I am looking to buy one, but know nothing about them. This would be a product that I would expect to see on consumer reports.

How soon will you rate carpet shampooers. Same as eveyone, I need one and always consult CR before large purchases. Please respond to your loyal customer/consumers.

Equally dispointed there's no Carpet Shampooer report. May not renew my subscriptions. Looks like this request has gone unaddressed for over a year now.

When are you going to check out carpet shampooer's????
We are all desperate for advise!!!

I am in the market for a carpet shampooer and was really disappointed to find no research on this item. I am also looking for a up right vacuum and the pickings suggested were slim. Wish you all would do as good a job with other products as you do with cars. Also with the recent scares about pet food I was surprised that there is only a very old report that I was unable to check out.

Love you guys but your slipping in recent years.

How does Chem-dry carpet and upholstery cleaning compare with various shampoo machines for dirt, mold, bacteria, and stain removal? How do "professional" brand-name companies compare with do-it-yourself rental machines for the same categories?

Obviously there's sufficient need for a CR review of carpet shampooers, so why not make your customers happy and oblige? It is disheartening to spend money for a CR subscription and not be able to benefit from same.

Everytime I attempt to log into the website, I have major problems with passwords. Today I requested a new password and received one in my email account, however, within 1 minute of receiving it, CR issued me a second "new" password. It took 15 minutes to actually get into the CR website because NEITHER new password was accepted. Let's get it together Consumer Reports!

I need to make a decision about purchasing a carpet shampoo device and was sure that CR would help. Instead, I found all these many plea's for help. Why do we have to see so many redundant, repetitive reviews of cell phones and autos and never a squeek about something that obviously many people need help with. Shame on CR!! Where is your self-vaunted customer service and helpfulness??

I suspect that there are no "GOOD" DIY carpet shampoo machines on the market. They can't possibly compete with the "commercial" equipment. I suspect there are so many variables (machine, carpet material, chemicals, operator) that it is sort of like deciding where to take your clothes to the cleaners. Experience maters most. It would be valuable, however to have some input on this from CR and also whether the marketing claims on "Circular Dry Foam" technology that it is really superior to other commercial cleaning methods, are supported by any valid studies..

There needs to be reviews for carpet shampoo vacuum's!

I am also waiting on your testing of carpet shampooers. Hurry!

Like many of you I also am wanting a great carpet cleaning machine. Our new Bissel lasted for about two uses and now doesn't dispense liquids. Our local Vacuum Repair man says that he hardly ever has to repair the old Hoover's (not the new made in China units). He recommended the F5187 which I am trying desperately to find and purchase.

Please do a review on carpet shampoo equipment. Thank you.

I too was looking for steam cleaner ("deep cleaner") reviews. I bought my last steam cleaner, a Hoover "Steam Vac Dual V" (model F7431-900) based on Consumer Reports reviews. We've had it many years, used it heavily due to a litter of puppies, loved it, but I thought it was about time to replace it - the plastic canisters are about worn out from use. When we got it, my husband measured how much it picked up compared to how much water he put in - and it left one cup per tank of water. We've replaced the brushes numerous times (careful though, you have to pull them straight out, if you can even reach the tabs inside). Consumer Reports, you should at least link back to the most recent Steam Cleaner article you have!

Hi ~ PLLLLEASE review in this catagory. If your looking for a place to test them use my Carpet =)

I am looking for a good affordable carpet cleaning machine, any suggestions? Anyone?

CONSUMER BEWARE - Royal Carpet Cleaner
I bought a Royal Carpet Cleaner, Model RY7910 in July 2008. I've taken it back to the dealer multiple times because the water kept filling the soap container. In April 2009 they replaced the machine. Since I had so many problems with the original machine, I tested the replacement fairly carefully.

FLOORS: After cleaning the floor in one room, 1/8 cup of soap was used. It doesn't clean as well as the Bissel machines, but at least it worked properly.

STAIRS: After cleaning one staircase, there was an additional 1/2 cup of liquid in the soap container. The mechanism that is suppose to pull soap from the container doesn't work so you end up cleaning with water only and the soap container will eventually overflow. This is the same problem that the original machine had.

WARRANTY: Additionally, when I contacted the Royal company, they said the warranty is good from the original purchase date (7/2008) instead of the date I received the replacement machine (4/2009). Basically, the warranty is not for the machine, it's for the time period. I will NEVER buy another Royal machine. They don't work and the company does not have a warrenty the serves the purpose of covering the machine.

Any opinions on the Oreck Floor Sweeper Restaurateur 9.5? Just pulled the carpet up from the terrazzo floors and need something to sweep up floor and area rug. Would like some ratings on dust mops, too. Thanks!

I would like to see a carpet cleaner test as well. Until then, does anyone have any suggestions for set in pet stains?

Who dropped the ball on this??
CR used to have a review that liked hoover best for water extraction but voted to call a service to save the hassle. Can't find that review anymore. These should be reviewed every time the vacuums are. What happened CR?

For anyone shopping and interested in my opinion...here goes.
For the record I have a Dyson Ball, Roomba, Scooba and the Hoover Steamvac. I've had the sharper image little wizard steam cleaner and the Eureka 4870 vacuum. I spend my fair share on the floor cleaning. So far - this is my third Hoover and still my favorite model for shampooing carpets.

I bought my second hoover shampooer - a steamvac around 2005 based on the CR reviews and was very pleased with the performance. No complaints there. Plus it had separation of the detergent and the clean water tank. The individual tanks are handy because I've had other ones where you had to mix the detergent and hot tap water - then life happens - you get a phone call and you have to deal with something else and come back to either shampooing with cold water or dump it out and start over. (and carpet shampoo isn't cheap) Absolutely great at water extraction and cleaning - but it developed a leak in the detergent tank that would drip drip slippery detergent everywhere. I read a few complaints online that hoover was charging people upwards of $50 to replace the tanks - and figured I'd just learn to live with it and walk fast/watch my step when carrying it back to the machine. Should say I have 4 pets - so I've definitely put these machines through their paces.

Fast forward about 4 years - I moved to a new home which apparently angered my hairy children. First Mistake - didn't bring the shampooer and they took it out on the carpets. I don't know about your pets - but when mine protest like this, they KNOW they're gonna get in trouble, so they fight sneaky and back it up on the baseboards where it gets down in that crack - really a hassle to clean!! I started shopping and found a new Hoover Steamvac Dual V2 (?) on HSN that had the separate detergent & water tanks - and had added edge cleaners to the setup!! (budget bonus was they sent it out to try with the first payment and broke up the rest of the purchase price over a few months) Groovy! Got it home - tank leaked. ARGH! HSN was super nice - quick to offer to ship me a new one - but all I wanted was the tank. So I called the manufacturer to see what could be done and they were great! Not only sent me a new tank for the new one - But told me there was a recall on the old tanks. So they sent tanks to my parents house for both the steamers they now have custody of. They also paid the shipping. (as it should be) Holy smokes. They stood behind a machine I bought 4 years ago. NICE.

So my hoover experience has still been solid. No motor problems, etc. No issues across the three that I have owned other than that tank which seems to be fixed. I love the separate tanks so I can dump water that gets cold without losing the detergent. This one gets out every drop it puts in - which is what you really want to have it do. (get that dirt out and the water too so you can walk on it faster and not risk souring)

This one has spinning brushes - I'll put it straight on top of a stain and let it just RUN while I hold down the spray button and the brushes scrub (like those spot cleaners?) and then vacuum it up. Works great - and I'm SURE because I use a black light to come back and check my homework when it's a pet stain.

Hand tools work great - nice long hose. Good for cleaning the stairs, cars, upholstery, etc. I was amazed at how dirty my carpet was in the car and have used this on upholstery with FANTASTIC results. Pretreat first with a laundry spray and then go over it as many times as you have to - no substitute for elbow grease. If it's a fresh stain - then it usually comes out first or second pass. (think white microfiber couch and friends visiting that for some reason think it's Ok to hand their toddlers juice/soda) It spits a tiny bit of water when you disconnect that hose, FYI so you'll have to wipe that up.

It blows the hot air from the motor over the carpet - which I suspect aids in the dry time. GREAT water extraction.

I also love the switch on the handle where you can switch to water only. It has a wash and rinse cycle! :) Shampooing is great - but shampoo residue can attract dirt and make your carpet kind of stiff/crunchy. Put the extra effort in to go over it when you're done with the rinse (water only) cycle and voila! Soft clean carpets. LOVE IT & Recommend.

Oh by the way - the tanks are clear. So you can see what's getting pulled out when it's running. That's nice - because unless you're dumping it in a white sink it's hard to get a true gauge on how dirty it is. I don't care HOW clean you think you are - what this machine pulls out is disgusting. Keep running that thing until the water comes up clear - then you've got some super clean carpets!

As long as you've got a closet to store it in - I would much rather own one and treat stains/spills as they happen rather than wait until I think "it's time" to call someone out.

We would like a review on the different cleaners for carpet vacs also.

Your carpet cleaning machine blurbs are very disappointing. Most of the information could be gotten by looking at the machines in the store or from the manufacturers' web sites.

When will CR actually test carpet cleaners and provide ratings based on those tests? That's what I subscribe to CR for.

I'd like to see ratings on steam cleaners for floors. I tried one that advertised it could be used on carpets and floors. It left puddles and lines of water all over the floors. Help!

Please do a review of carpet cleaning equipment (steam cleaners and etc). Thanks !

We purchased Bissell's Little Green Machine to use with our pets. We are now returning our 2nd machine. Both of the machines has leaked where the hose attaches to the main part of the shampooer. One also did not vacumn up any liquid unless I held the hose up in the air. My husband talked with Bissell and they said it was an internal problem. I am now shopping for another shampooer and will probably go with a smaller upright as I already have a larger Hoover for big jobs. Happy that Walmart takes back just about anything.

I want to get my carpets professionaly cleaned. I'm leaning toward the dry cleaning method, but I cannot find any consumer reports on this. I would like to know average cost etc. This site has not been helpful at all. How unfortunate

Add me to those who want a rug shampooer/Steam Cleaner test. The interest is obviously there! Why hasn't this happened?

I cannot believe it! CR STILL has not reviewed steam cleaners for carpets. I have been hoping for this one for three years!

Well, have you set a date yet on the carpet cleaners.

I subscrbed to your service today in hopes of finds rating on carpet cleaners/steamers. Was very disappointed to find that you have no testing done on these. I see there are many requests in the comments for testing to be done. Why is CR not listening to the consumer? These are a very common purchase and we need a reliable source to test and rate these machines. I hope to see some rating soon.

I just subscribed 2 minutes ago...My whole purpose was to find out about carpet shampooers...SOMEONE HELP US ALLLLL !!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, Kat

Carpet shampooers are important! Please rate them for us!

So where are the ratings for a carpet shampooer? This is why I subscribed?

I am surprised that so many people here do not realize that most web sites that offer a comment section do not read it! Think about the enormity of the proposed task, with comments left throughout the site. A "comments" section is NOT a "feedback" or "contact us" section! Stop being pissed that Consumer Reports did not read your one-of-hundreds comments!

I have been subscribing to this site for several years and to the magazine since the middle 70's. I think I have seen the test of carpet shampooers in your magazine---so why aren't they on this site. I just read comments from over a year ago, and the information still isn't here. Come on CR, you can do better than this.Don't disappoint me.

Along with everyone else, I am disapointed that CR continues not to do a review of carpet steam cleaners, AND that there isn't any reason posted as to why not or when. Isn't this organization called CONSUMER Reports?

I would like to see a report on rug shampooers.

I want to buy a capet shapoomer what do u think i can buy....
