If you’ve got any stainless-steel appliances in your kitchen, you’ll know that the name of the finish is something of a misnomer. “Stainless” surfaces can definitely get stained and dirty.
Just ask Kristina Murray, who thought the new stainless-steel appliances in her Cornwall, New York, house “looked really cool nestled under mocha-stained cabinets and black granite countertops.” But when her son began to put his hands and mouth on virtually everything in the kitchen she and her husband started to see stainless in a different light. “We realized it takes a lot of work to maintain its shiny finish,” she says.
Essential information: Read "Best home appliances for the holidays" to find top kitchen gear for your home.
The article says "The Method, Pledge, and Weiman sheets are one-step cleaners; with the other four you have to clean and then buff the surface." yet the chart shows that Weiman is an aerosol product, not a wipe.
Have you guys tested the "Bar Keepers Friend" cleaners?
I personally use a product called Sheila Shine. It is only found in places that sell professional cleaning products. The person who cleans the retail store up every evening where I work uses it. It definately has an odor that last's for a little while, but it does actually repel fingerprints, and cleans off all the peanut butter and anything else that ends up on my fridge or dishwasher or stove.
What I would like to see is an article about getting polymerized oil stains off of stainless, such as the ones you can get on a stainless steel stove or the outside (or even inside) of a stainless frying pan. This are the nice brown film of cured oil that seems impervious to just about everything.
I cannot get the streaks out of my stainless steel Profile refrigerator. When the sunlight shines on it I see streaks even though I have cleaned it with a number of things including soap and water as their instructions say to do. I am very frustrated.
I have tried many differnet stainless steel cleaners and they all have left my appliances streaked. Besides leaving them so streaked the odors from them are really bad. My friend told me about a polish called Signature Polish that sub-zero and wolf recommends for stainless steel. I called the Co. and got a couple of bottles and cannot belive the difference. I washed my appliances down with soap and water and dried them real well to get off all the other cleaners and now my stainless steel looks like it did when I first got it. The polish is also excellent on my wood cabinets and fine wood furniture. I called them at 877-3POLISH when I ordered. They were extremly nice and very helpful.
Anyone try the 3M SS cleaner. I have and it works pretty good. First you apply with paper towel then you wipe off with a clean paper towel.
Weimans is the best, no streaking, excellent cleaner.
I've searched the web for suggestions on removing surface scratches on stainless steel appliances. My May'08 "Dream" kitchen remodel came with the price of--whatever comes in first will get nicked by what comes in next. The stainless steel appliances were installed, then, next, the cabinet crew scratched appliance fronts in spite of covering things with sheets and blankets. I researched the website discussions and saw a conclusion that the old 60's pot and pan bottom cleanser for RevereWare would remove scratches best. Is that True? What works best to remove surface scratches on stainless steel appliances? Man, you have to have been asked this innumerable times by now.
Try Sheila Shine. I have found it works the best on all my SS. The best pricing I found it for is on SheilaShineDirect.
Sheila Shine works oak but is very oily and is also very toxic. I found a cleaner called Bayes Premium Stainless Steel Cleaner that is oil based like Sheila Shine but is non-toxic and non hazerdous. It is also part of the EPA's , design for the environment program. Have not seen it in stores yet but you can get it at their web site - www.bayescleaners.com

HOW CAN I GET WATER STAINS OFF OF MY GRANITE COUNTER TOPS?
i have water stains on my stainless steel freezer door from the water dispenser, any idea's on how to remove water stains?
I have tried several SS cleaners and they all have left my SS appliances streaky and smeared. I found Signature Polish at 877-3POLISH or signaturepolishonline.com It is truly a product that works great and is easy to use. I started to regret purchasing all SS appliances in my kitchen until I found Signature Polsih. The customer service dept. is very helpful also.
I read another blog recommending Murphy's Oil Soap. I love this idea because I like to simplify and don't like having a product that can only be used to clean one thing (i.e. Stainless Steel Cleaner). I already use Murphy's Oil Soap. After a little trial and error, I found that this method works best. Take a wet microfiber cloth and put a quarter size amount of Murphy's in the center. Use that to "polish" on to the stainless surface. Wipe immediately with a second dry cloth to polish. It works like a dream. The little bit of "oil" in the Murphy's polishes well, while the "soap" prevents the surface from being oily and slick like the other recommended cleansers. And the surface becomes "smudgeless" which is even better.
The best ss cleaner I have used on appliances is WD-40. Use only a small amount on a soft rag or even a soft paper towel and rub it on the surface of the appliance while rubbing only in the direction of the grain of the stainless steel. Then rub the stainless with a soft dry rag going with the grain to make sure there is no residue. Often you don't have to use another rag if you make sure jnot to overuse the WD-40. It works great on my Thermador stainless appliances and doesn't leave a greasy film. It also remains clean for quite a while, particularly if you use a dry rag or paper towel when someone leaves a handprint or other spot on the stainless.
Please!!! READ your your operating instructions booklet as how to keep your ss appliances clean. I just bought two different brand appliances and read the instructions " how to keep it clean",and both gave different instructions. From what I have been reading in messages boards differents cleaners work for different brands and also I read that the finish and metal compound is different in all brands, that is why I say READ your instructions or go to the manufacturer web site and look up what they recommend. In my case,BOTH manufacturer recomended a "soft clean cloth to polish and wipe the door".DO NOT use: Paper towels, windows sprays ammonia, abrasive cloths, steel wool,Flammable liquids,ACIDIC or vinegar based cleaners or oven cleaners.DO USE:Warm soapy (gentle) water for routine cleaning,DRY with soft ,clean cloth and use an automotive or appliance wax specially designed for clear coat surfaces.
Hope this helps.
We've tested every stainless product on the market and what we have found are that their are basically two types of stainless cleaners, oil based and water based. Water based cleaners don't work. They are 'green', but lack perfomace. Oil based cleaners will clean, shine and protect against finger smudges (some better than others) but they are all toxic. Some are fatal if swallowed (skull and cross bones on a label should be a warning sign). You know this if you've ever gotten high off the fumes!
"Bayes Premium Cleaners" (www.bayescleaners.com) has an OIL based product that was recently approved by the Environmental Protection Agency and has been awarded with their Design for the Environment logo. It is on the bottle. To our knowledge, this is the only cleaner that has this prestigous designation. Check out the reviews for this product on About.com (search Bayes Stainless), Cooking Club of America, and Gourmet magazine.
Nothing works better, and nothing is safer. They gaurantee it.
I LOVE the Magic Complete Stainless steel spray...I'm having a hard time finding it now..Bed, Bath & Beyond use to carry it, but no more..I'm online right now trying to find someplace local to buy it..I've used a few brands and just purchased a product called "advanced"..{that's what bed bath and beyond is selling now..TERRIBLE!!!!.. Nothing comes close to the job that Magic does..
A test is not a proper test until all stainless steel cleaning products are tried. And i have tried them all.
Each have their different advantages. If you want to clean and polish stainless steel appliances then the untimate40 stainless steel cleaner wins by miles available at http://www.stainlesssteelcleaner.co.uk and if you want to restore and clean stainless steel copper and brass then http://www.quickleen.co.uk can not be matched for speed and value.
hope this helps.
who ever suggested wd40 and baby oil need to get their head tested and these can find there way into food in a kitchen environment
I would personally NOT use Sheila Shine. I have read that a couple of people have recommended it. I used to work in a big office building, and we would use it to clean the elevators. Yes it did a good job, but you have to wear protective gear in order to use it. (Don't believe me? Check the MSDS sheet.) On the company's website it specifically states that it is a dangerous product, not to be used with out proper gear and ventalation. Also it states not to use around children. What I remember is that it was hard to get it into the stainless steel elevators, without leaving a residue. Also, if exposed to it for any amount of time, it gave a person a headache. It works, but is it worth the consequences? It is not in my opinion.
Easy Off Stainless Steel Cleaner works like a dream for me. You can get it at Smart & Final. I haven't found anything to remove water spots or streaks once you let them get on the appliances though. Scratches must be removed professionally. Lets face it, stainless is a pain. If I knew then what i know now i would have gotten black appliances.
Has anyone tried a product called Brass Renew which claims to clean and replate brass? I have just bought it and it appears to be a dud so I am interested in knowing if anyone else has any feedback. Also, how would I go about asking them to test this product? Thanks for anyone's help.

Googled cleaning stainless steel and came upon a MAGICAL solution:
OLIVE OIL!!!!
I had those annoying streaks, spots from splashed floor cleaner, etc and had varying success with stainless steel cleaners. But a bit of regular olive oil on a paper towel and WALAAAAA. Brand new perfection.
Am on a crusade to tell everyone!
(and while I'm at it: Also discovered that white vinegar works great as a dishwasher rinse aid. Thank me)
I found a new product being demonstrated at a Flea Market in Excelsior MN called DeBruce Polish. This stuff is awesome! It is odor-less AND non-toxic, the guy actually put some on his tongue!! He was removing any and all food stuffs put on the stainless steel- even permanent marker- streak free!! I can touch up a spot and not have to do the whole surface EVERY TIME! It's great!!! It ALSO works on my ceramic cook top and it's not abrasive. Now all my friends with stainless steel use it.
The stainless steel cleaner debate was settled years ago on TV and the ULTIMATE40 Stainless steel cleaner won by miles. Worked out cheaper than baby oil and WD40 and that was without the health risks involve using petroleum based product that could get into you food.
The website is http://www.stainlesssteelcleaner.co.uk or just google ultimate40 stainless steel cleaner that should get you there.
If you have stains or discoloration like burn marks or flame make use a product at www.steelcleaner.com first and then use the ultimat40 polish to finish.
I HAVE A BEACH HOUSE AND SS COUNTER TOPS. I AM FINDING RUST SPOTS ON THE SS,. WHATS UP WITH THAT
I have tried all the stainless steel cleaning tips to no avail and now use the ultimate40 stainless steel cleaner
I like the ultimate40 stainless steel cleaner and polish as it the fastest i have tried and has a lovely lemon scent smell. It seems also to last for ever.
You can get it from http://www.granitepolish.co.uk or http://www.stainlesssteelcleaner.co.uk in the cleaning section
Just tried the olive oil trick on fridge and stove - worked beautifully! Thanks Karin!
I have a stainless steel cooktop in my island. I can every summer using large canning pots. It has left a hard black residue on the stove in which I cannot remove. Anyone have any suggestions on what to use to clean it?
Thanks Karin! OLIVE OIL works great on my kitchen sink and other SS appliances and it is safe for kids and pets too.
Try WD40. It cleans and shines Stainless Steel and lasts for a long time.
Karen is right. I tried olive oil on the stainless and it is the best. I have tried so many products and was so unhappy with my stainless appliances. I now love them as I did when they were new. Olive oil also works great on wood cabinets and I have used the vinegar in my dishwasher for years. Another hint for glass that has become cloudy soak them in a bucket with denture cleaner. They will sparkle like new.
my mother-in-law sprayed glass cleaner (with ammonia) on our SS fridge, walked away so it never got wiped down. we now have all of these awful looking discoloration stains. anybody have any recommendations on how to get rid of these stains? the stains are a shade lighter than the rest of the refridgerator.
I just used the olive oil and it worked very well. I've ordered the Ultimate40 and we'll see how that works. I've tried both Weilman wipes and aresol spray and they BOTH streak,I don't care what they say. I even scrubbed everything else of and re-tried the stuff and it still streaked.A waste of money. Based on comments here I am looking forward to the Ultimate.
A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO kAREN (4/16/09)
i HAVE BEEN FIGHTING WITH MY STAINLESS STEEL APPLIANCES TRYING TO KEEP THEM STREAK-FREE.
i HAVE PURCHASED MANY PRODUCTS WITH NO SATISFACTION.
TONIGHT I TRIED THE OLIVE OIL AND MY APPLIANCES LOOK BRAND NEW AND IT ONLY TOOK ME MINUTES TO DO THEM ALL.
HUGS HUGS AND MORE HUGS
I have a stainless steel dishwasher, stove top, double oven, microwave and HUGE all fridge, all freezer, installed side by side. I am a clean freak, and any streaks on any of these appliances will drive me crazy. I have used, (and tossed out), many, many cleaners, including specialty cleaners and have found that Endust, hypo-allergenic, all purpose cleaner is the BEST! Streak free shine, minimal effort, no harsh smell...gets out water spots, and fingerprints with almost no buffing for a streak-free finish. The only appliance it doesn't work on, is my dishwasher. For that I use just a wet rag and a 3-M stainless microfiber cloth to buff to a nice finish. It says it provides a streak free finish on anything, but unfortunately, that isn't the truth. Not to my standards, anyway. But for stainless, it can not be beat!
